binenta ko crv ko to upgrade to a bigger suv, im was planning to buy fortuner, actually may unit nako for release, but i've heard so many negative coments about the fortuner from my friends so alterra purchase ko. the exterior may not be as i mpressive as fortuner, but when u drive the alterra, all praises lahat ng passengers na sumakay. the ride is surprisingly smooth, very quiet yet very powerful engine, sobrang spacious, dami aircon vents. no regrets, im happy alterra nabili ko.

The lack of numbers in very proud Alterra owners in this forum should be clue enough for you...

Kaya lang, mahaba talaga pila for the Fortuner and the dealers are still as unscrupulous as ever!

Fortuner is much more spacious than the alterra. Talking about the third row seats, the 3rd row seat in the fortuner is much more comfortable than the Alterra. Getting in and out the 3rd row seat of the Fortuner (thanks to its fold and tumble middle row seats) is very easy than the Alterra because the Alterra only has sliding middle row seats (bitin pa yung pagkaka slide kaya masikip at mahirap lumabas sa third row). And of course the Fortuner's 3rd row seat has a 3-point ELR seatbelts and head rests, making it really comfy to seat on the 3rd row.

oh baka may magalit nanaman dyan ha, observation ko lang yan!

    Just my .02! Peace tayo!

    Alterra versus Fortuner

Aesthetics... this one goes to the Fortuner hands down - though the visible spare tire is really an eyesore. The Alterra looks good in some angles but its overall shape & wheel design makes it look dorky.

Interior & Ergonomics... I'd give this to the Alterra. The Fortuner's interior looks so bland... thanks to its choice of color & upholstery material. The plastics are hard and pity that the steering wheel & handbrakes are the only ones clad in leather. I give credit to Toyota for coming up with really comfortable seats for 7 though the only chink in the armor is the lack of luggage space should all seats be occupied. The Alterra on the other hand looks a lot nicer and I'm most impresed with the individual ceiling flush aircon (unlike the miniscule rear fan blower of the Fortuner). Seating is the weak point of the Alterra, its third row isn't as comfy as the Fortuner though it is just at par with the Everest. Ingress & egress out of the third row also is a tough challenge (though this can be remedied if you permanently remove the middle seat of the second row). But it makes it up by offering a lot more luggage space at the back.

Ride Quality... Alterra! Compared to even other midsize SUVs (Pajero, Trooper, etc.) the Fortuner is down on the bottom of the list. As I've said before, the steering wheel shudders even at minor road imperfections while the middle & last row bobs up and down like a horse (is it the good looking but oversized tires?). It ain't as bad as the ride of the Hi-Lux but the Alterra has a more solid feel & better suspension absorbency.

Engine... a tie! The Fortuner's strengths is its higher hp & torque output (at least for the 3.0L D4D & 2.7L VVTi variants). The VVTi engine needs some high revs to get going but it does the job while the 3.0L D4D engine pulls superbly off the line! It's weakness? The problems that is hounding the 2.5L D4D engine, a noisier engine and trashy VVTi engine. The Alterra feels more refined & smoother.

Overall? I'd have a hard time choosing between the two. If you don't need 4WD capability, the 2.7L VVTi variant is a nice choice (though the waiting line for this is LOOOOOOOOOOOONG). Though the practice of some dealers to require their customers to avail of overpriced accessories is a major turn-off! For a headache free purchase, the Alterra is the way to go.

But if you don't really need 7 seats, the Sorento is a much better buy (having a good engine, ride characteristic & good crash rating tests stateside).

    Negative points of the Alterra:
    - No comfy middle seat in the middle row, so its basically a 6-seater
    - Middle row seats can only be moved forward and backward not folded, so 3rd row passengers will have a hard time getting in and out.
    - No headrests in the 3rd row seat.

    Negative points of the Fortuner
    - Could have benefitted with a better Head Unit
    - although 3rd row seats have headrests, medyo mababa yung ceiling - if you hit a hump hard, you'll hit your head on the ceiling.
    - Almost no cargo space when all seats are used.

According sa kabilang thread kaya konti ang nagpaparamdam na owners ng alterra dito is they are busy enjoying their ride unlike sa Fortuner dami prob kaya pino-post nila dito (that is for the D4D)

Actually, the Fortuner and Alterra are both real SUVs, in every sense of the word. The very first SUVs were seven/five-seater bodies based off of pickups anyway (which is exactly what the Fortuner, Alterra and Everest are). All three provide reasonable comfort, decent on-road handling, good off-road handling and good space for just the right price.

It's the demands of the market for more luxury, a more carlike ride, carlike speed and performance, etcetera, that have pushed older SUVs up and out of the "affordable" price bracket.

I mean, c'mon, 3 million for a Patrol or Pajero? WTF?

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...

Ride Quality... Alterra! Compared to even other midsize SUVs (Pajero, Trooper, etc.) the Fortuner is down on the bottom of the list---- im sorry! but i totally disagree! paano mas maganda ang ride quality ng sasakyan na may leaf spring ang rear suspension compare to coil spring???

for the price of 1m+, the fortuner is definitely a good buy, i mean if u have the money to spend, then go for the bmw's x3 or x5, even volvo's xc90. for those who try to compare the fortuner to kia sorento.... ok lang kayo? kahit papano ang fortuner is toyota made, while sorento is kia made, its your choice! baka naman mahirapan kayo sa mga parts ng kia later on

The Alterra third row seat is a joke, just like the one on the CRV. Good only for kids and proportionally-challenged. No footwell and headrest unlike the Fortuner. Also look at the cup holders on the doors, this wouldn't last with a hyper-active 4 year old.
