on a neutral and bias-less point of view, what would you choose, 2wd or 4wd ??
and idol otep, ano po yung meaning ng "binding phenomenon ??"
OT: http://www.4x4abc.com/4WD101/def_turn.html
Binding Damage: http://www.4x4abc.com/4WD101/driveline-bind.htmlOnly when going straight all four wheels are turning at the same speed rate (or at least about the same rate. I'll add a separate page to explain the exceptions)
As soon as a turn is initiated all four wheels will rotate at different rates since each of them follows a different imaginary circle.
This is what happens during a turn:
The inside wheels will rotate with less rpm than the outside wheels.
The differential on the rear axle guarantees that the rpm delivered via drive shaft from the transfer case are distributed to the left and right wheel as needed. Meaning equal rpm when traveling straight - less rpm to the inside wheel and more rpm to the outside wheel when in a turn.
The differential of the front axle does exactly the same thing.
The axle differentials take care of the need for different wheel rpm.
Interestingly enough during a turn the front axle needs more rpm than the rear axle. Here is why:
The front inside wheel will need more rpm than the rear inside wheel.
The front outside wheel will need more rpm than the rear outside wheel.
This means that the front wheels need more rpm than the rear wheels in a turn
When you add the rpm of front wheels (A+B) you will find that the number is higher than the combined rpm of the rear wheels (C+D).
Unlike full time 4WD - Part time 4WD is not able to accomodate the need for different axle speeds.

If you have no plans of intentionally going off-road, I suggest stick with the 2wd. It is still high enough for bad urban roads and the occasional flood.

4wd are really usefull specially to a van in my experience. a lot of time I get stuck on a beach or even a small mud on a Spacegear and specially on a Townace...
considering the binding phenomenon, the owner accidentally drive it for about 112kmh
I'll take my chances on the 4wd po. but our van is 2wd right now.
for the routes that you will take (Manila-Ilocos-Cagayan), you won't need a 4wd vehicle.

Medyo napapaisip ako between the 2006 Starex CRDi M/T and the Ford Everest. What do you guys think?
Considering the long highway drives to the northern provinces that include the winding mountain climbs in Sta. Fe, Nueva Vizcaya, and also Kennon going to Baguio, what should i get ? Or, which is better suited for the trips ?
If you value your 3rd row passengers, get a Starex. The Everest is not a dedicated people hauler. It is a 5 seater with added seats in the luggage compartment.
Would you want to be stuck in the Everest's 3rd row for a 6 hour trip? I won't.

The Everest is really for the rugged type... the Starex is a better people hauler.
Ang pagbalik ng comeback...
totoo yan.. nakailang test drives/rides na me ng everest and starex. iba ang van sa space, compared to s/aUVS, wagons.
Bottom line bro, it'll really depend on how you're gonna use that vehicle, pero for me mas versatile yung starex, for hauling people, it's the better choice compared to AUV's, it's not a bad for hauling things either. Pwedeng pwede na yun sa Dalton Pass at Kennon road![]()
Sa Starex wala ka nang iisiping carpet na pwede madumihan because the floor is rubber.

Owkeey !! Mga idol, maraming salamat sa inyo. Na-e-enforce ang choice ko na Starex nalang. Between both vehicles, I'm leaning toward the starex na, at ito ay dahil sa tulong ng mga inputs nyo.
Wag sana kayo makulitan ha. Isa pang tanong.
Is the Starex 2wd capable of the long highways and mountain ascending trips even when packed full ??
Yup. Baguio is no problem for it. Pati yung paakyat ng Mt. Samat.

Hahaha !! OK yan idol Otep ah, pati Mt. Samat.
Mostly naman sa paved roads ako dadaan. Kaya ko lang kino-consider ang 4wd ay dahil sa Kennon Rd. at Dalton Pass sa Sta. Fe, Vizcaya when packed full.
Ano sa tingin mo idol Otep at mga ka-tsikot jan ??
4wd ay same power lang as 2wd. Difference lang is kapag 4wd, kahit mahina ang traction ng surface mas may chance siya na makaabante.
Kung hindi naman nawawalan ng kapit ang gulong mo paakyat ng Kennon (paved naman iyon), ok na ang 2wd.

Isn't the Starex equipped with an LSD? That would mean that it can also cope with low traction conditions, except if both rear wheels get stuck. Mud and loose sand is more dangerous for open-differential 2WD vehicles, because you can get stuck with one tire spinning while the one with more traction stays completely still.
Of course, it's much much harder to get stuck in a 4WD car like the Everest, but you're not likely to meet conditions like that on those roads.

Ang pagbalik ng comeback...
Wala na pong LSD ngayon. Open diff na like the rest of the vans/auvs and most suvs in the market today.
Starex lang ata ang volume seller na naka-LSD dati.
