an engine turned off does not consume fuel. but upon starting, some engines settle immediately to its usual idling rpm of 700-900, while other engines, like mine, first go to a higher rpm, then go down slowly to the usual idling rpm.
what i did, was to observe how high my starting rpm would go, and how fast it would settle to the usual idling rpm of 700-900 per minute.
with those in mind, i figured, rightly or wrongly, that my break-even stoplight time, was 30 seconds.
if the stoplight lasts more than 30 seconds and i turn off my engine, "i am ahead".
if the stoptime is less than 30 seconds and i still turn off the engine, "i use up more fuel" when i start the engine than if i just kept it running.

it keeps me entertained.
