"[using] Mr. Singh's invention, the yearly national fuel savings would equal the amount of oil America imports from the Persian Gulf."

We are witnessing the culmination of resource depletions of every commodity and source on Earth on a massive scale along with senseless " Burning up of Oxygen " all over to keep us mobile, active & warm. At this point of time my Groovy technology is the only affordable solution as " New or Retrofits " that has emerged over time, regardless of some people's personal issues and their scientific merits to disprove it. Proof just keeps rolling in all the time. How many independent results equal positive findings ? When does the World take notice and see for ' Themselves ' just how good and simple the Grooves are ? At this point of time We do offer definitive solutions to bring down Global Warming & CO2 releases ! As none seem to be worried or effected by such issues? We are sure you will find the same " changes " that others have found after grooving .. Increased Torque, Increased Low-End Power and Overall Fuel Savings with Lower Emissions, resulting in much cleaner engines with lower operating temperatures and the capacity for unusually efficient engine " Tune Ups " without the dreaded " Knock or Ping " ! Some call this movement ~" A Single Straw Revolution " ! With a hope to bring about some positive changes around us and the way we drive into the Future . . . . .
Until viable alternative Fuels & Energy sources are Discovered or Invented, we will have to deal with " Air Breathing " Internal Combustion Engines burning up Petroleum products along with 15 POUNDS of AIR for every pound of fuel used up. Even IF advancements such as Bio-Fuels & Hydrogen Gas did come in to replace Oil we would still need plenty of Air to Oxidize all this fuel into Power !! Millions of drivers will not be able to afford new vehicles, even with ZERO percent financing. For the moment, large scale improvements in Engine Efficiency out of existing engines is most essential for our long term economic independence and social well being. Or Else ?? It is a real" Up - Hill Task " for most of us !

    Read on ! Squish, Squash & finally Squashed ! ! !

US Patent 6237579 is applicable to any 2 or 4 cycle internal combustion engines featuring " Squish or Quench " concepts. The placement of one or more grooves or channels or passages in the squish area as shown & described in the first page of my US Patent 6237579 results in "Accelerated Laminar Total Clean Burn Combustion " out of any fuel ? Meaning to say, this simple but radical design change to squish areas & configurations enhances progressive turbulence in the charge close to the skin of the combustion chamber and further directs the (added) turbulence towards the igniter followed by multiple flame front propagation thus resulting in a radical change to " In-cylinder Combustion ". This technology is as radical a change to engine design as it was with the introduction of the ' quench ' concepts by Sir Harry Ricardo almost 80 + years ago. ALTCBC improves " Torque & Power " through the entire operating range with lesser amounts of fuel. This simple design change "opens up" the combustion chamber to activity. Hy-Brids can now benefit from enormous low-end torque produced out of smaller displacement engines to pull away with ease. Simplicity in design is the key to success in keeping down costs and pays for itself on the long run in a big way !

After this simple design change ~ Obsolete Side Valve Engines which feature large quench areas have shown reductions of up to 42.5 % in fuel consumption ( BSFC) when fully loaded at 2000 rpm on the dyno further producing more torque & power at lower operating temperatures in comparison to a stock engine. ( ARAI Test Results )

If the fuel inputs had dropped that drastically - What do you think the outcomes of " CO2 & Emissions " ~ Could or Would be ~ Out of grooved engines ? And the impact all this will have on " Carbon Credit " ...... and its earnings in the future ?

"Remember the most important factor in increasing engine performance and efficiency is to create " maximum turbulence " in the compression chamber."--Engine Legend Pat Goodman

This simple cost effective design change has the same dramatic effects on dual-fuel applications too & can accept much higher compression ratios on standard gas with out the interference of knock or pri-ignition. This design change requires minute in-puts to optimize the size & location of the grooves along with compatible compression ratios to optimize existing 2 or 3 or 4 & 5 valve combustion chamber designs. These changes are close to ' Zero cost inputs ' when it comes to mass scale production - Costing almost " Nil " as additional costs. The only other costs to be considered are " Licensing & Royalties " for the use of IPR.?

Lots of debates are on to figure out how this design could be achieving these advantages over normal squish & quench concepts. Lets leave the ' Indepth Study ' to the learned & see if they can improve upon it any further ? While this design is ready for implementation & is sure to make a Big Big difference to the Motoring World in the form of fuel savings considering the Cost of Crude Oils going past $ 100+ along-with the Effects of Global Warming taking over in a Big way ? Effecting all of us & the rest on the Planet too ! Some call it ~ " The Dimming Sun " ! ? ! ( Check it out on the net, it is for real ! ) A lot more Surprises are awaited in time to come . . . ? For Starters ~ There is three times more frozen CO2 hidden beneath the melting glaciers & sheets of age old ice waiting to surface up ..... This will bring about some sudden changes in the Poles ?

As a reminder - This design literally " Spells & Achieves "~ " More out of Less " involving the least inputs into existing engine designs.

We believe ~ " A Stitch In Time, Can Save Nine & More " ?
What Good Are " Discoveries & Inventions " ~ If They Are Not Put To Use ?

" The Answer My Friend . . . Is Blowing In The Wind ...... !!! " The essence of life called “Crude Oils“ soaring past $ 100 + mark has dampened the Global Spirit of well being. Most average motorists are in a dizzy of what awaits them as ‘ Future Shock ‘ ! While the Automobile Industry fully anticipating these hikes are going " Full Steam Ahead " stamping out Millions of ‘ Wonder Machines ‘ of every conceivable shape and size to promote & pacify the needs of personalized transportation like never before. All this hyper-activity has led to full house parking lots sending most of us on merry go-rounds like never before ? To add to all this, the existing " ON THE RUN " One Billion + I C Engines ticking away Globally are pushing the demands for Fuel & Oil beyond the reach of supply making Crude Oils even more expensive than the automobile itself ?

' How’s that ' for an equation ? Global Oil Sales each year are exceeding $1500 + Billion mark with Exxon Mobil alone showing a full year revenue of $ 371 + Billion. Sooner then later all this Oil is sure to burn up & turn into " Smoke & CO2 " and hang in the air for a while ?

Did you know One Gallon Of Fuel burns up enough AIR to let out almost 20 Lbs of CO2 back into the air from the tail pipe ?
Did you know One Litre of Petrol burns up enough Air to produce almost 2.5 Kgs of CO2 out of in-cylinder combustion !

It is high time we act with responsibility to enlighten the World At Large, about our shortcomings and our own makings that have brought about these life styles of " Burn-Ups & Burn-Outs." Not to forget the very air we ' breathe in ' is polluted by excessive CO2 and harmful emissions alongwith many other Monoxides & Die-Oxides & Trioxides descending from the skies each night ? Added to all the Jumbo-Jets flying overhead contributing to the rest of the " high altitude fallouts & hangouts " of CO2 & Jet Trails causing " Global Warming out of Heat Trapping " !

All the fuel we have burned up in the last 100 years has come from beneath. We need to remind ourselves – Knowingly or Unknowingly, we are burning up fossil fuels “ A Hundred Thousand Times Faster “ than what it took Nature to Oyster this Oil in the first place. As responsible Citizens of this Planet we need to leave behind adequate fuel and resources for our next generations to explore the pleasures of personalized transportation – Or else our generation will be blamed for these senseless acts that we are committing & executing in style, each moment, as though tomorrow never existed ! ? The Human Race in their " quest to conquest " are burning up vast quantities of valuable Life Supporting ' Oxygen ' in the AIR at a much faster pace than what Nature can do to " break down " these excessive bi-products of CO2 & Trash floating around us in the air and water, ending up ' tipping ' the very balance of existence on Mother Earth for all of us to live in !.?

This is not the way out Sir, ….. ? No ! No ! ! No ........

The World is heading the wrong way for sure ! On Every Count we humans are thoughtlessly Injuring & Killing Nature that has supported our very existence on Mother Earth all this while ! Soon the Energy in the Air & Water will start to diminish . . . failing to support Life ! It is high time we looked at simple solutions floating around us rather than digging up a big " Pit " to bury our past ! Even small changes can have large long-term consequences on ecological systems and humans. The recent UN reports on Global Warming must be running "cold sweat " in most Industrial & Political Circles... While the rest of the World is waking up to the Truth ! Of what awaits us. . . in time to come ? I am reminded about the sand clock running out of sand on the top end and the Gravity of the situation taking over ?

What has been working since 1995 with countless engines modified and working better than ever, has fairly recently been brought to the US from India. We have also been contacted by volunteer testers in various other locations around the world.

Somender Singh has been awarded an US Patent for his discovery of how to gain more engine power and economy by utilizing a small groove cut into the squish area(s) of the typical Internal Combustion Engine (ICE). The Groove(s) allows gasses to expand and compress with a quality that has consistently improved fuel efficiency, lowered operating temperature, improved torque and max power as well as lowering idle speed significantly.

notice the 'squirt' allowed by the Grooves (in red) in this cutaway view

The Groove has beneficial effects on the compression stroke as well as the power stroke. On the compression stroke, the Groove channels one last bit of air/fuel mixture towards the spark plug, maintaining swirl until the spark provides ignition. On the power stroke, the Groove provides a channel for hot gasses to jet towards the cylinder wall and rapidly ignite mixture in the squish area. It also appears that the Groove can destroy standing vortices in the squish areas as well.

    http://somender-singh.com/images/cylinder1.gif

Without grooves, the combustion is incomplete and unburned fuel remains in the cylinder. This unburned fuel is still expanding during the exhaust stroke. At the end of the exhaust stroke, the expanding unburned gases flow past the intake valve into the intake manifold, causing poor idle, carbon deposits and lower performance. Notice the areas left unburned. This is the extent of the flamefront.

    http://somender-singh.com/images/gro...s/scott7sm.jpg

Shown here are two different types of groove for illustration purposes only. Normally only one type of Groove is used (see photo). Follow this link to see other images of Grooved engines.

With the grooved cylinder heads, combustion is more complete leaving little unburned fuel behind, more of the fuel is used to generate power-faster, reducing the time that internal surfaces are exposed to heat. (That’s also why engines typically run 20 degrees F. cooler with a Groove)

For more comparison pictures go here http://somender-singh.com/content/view/65/43/

With the modified heads, very little unburned fuel remains during the exhaust stroke. With less burning fuel to expand during the overlap period, the gasses flowing past the intake valve are reduced, resulting in improved idle quality even below 500rpm !

It has been conclusively proven that the Grooves are effective because of the additional benefits they allow: Higher compression ratio, less advance, lower idle speed and lower octane fuel. The difference in a tuned up Grooved engine is simple to understand. If the same tune, advance, and CR was used for an unGrooved engine, it probably wouldn't even start!

Eliminating Ping (also called 'knock' or detonation) allows for an advance setting that is much closer to Top Dead Center (TDC) to get more power from each stroke of the Piston. This quality of a Grooved engine also enables a higher compression ratio with the use of regular octane fuel, thus adding more improvements to the quality of combustion and preventing knock, or worse, 'pre-ignition'. It has been well known that higher compression makes a more efficient engine, that's why diesels work so well. The problem is, that increased compression (pressure) and high temperature also leads to a more volatile combustion chamber and you usually get 'knock', which means the air-fuel mixture in the cylinder is igniting before the spark plug fires.

This can be damaging to the engine if combustion occurs too far before the piston gets to TDC because the expanding gasses are trying to make the engine run backwards in that one cylinder while the rest of the engine is going 'forwards'. Bad news.

Since Grooved engines 'seem' to burn the fuel faster, you can wait to ignite the fuel-air mixture until the piston is near the top of its stroke. That leaves more energy pushing on the piston as the burning gasses expand and exposes the piston and cylinder walls to heat for a shorter time period. This combination of effects safely allows for a higher compression ratio to be used.
The Groove 'seems' to create more mixing (turbulence) in the burning gasses, making sure that more of the fuel/air mixture gets to be completely burned before the exhaust ports open and the engine 'exhales' the used fuel/air mixture. By the way, a -surprising- amount of fuel/air mixture is NOT burned in every single stroke of your typical engine. It is allowed to exit through the tailpipe and is sometimes called pollution. It definitely is wasted fuel that you paid for with good money .

The Groove reduces the amount of unburned fuel/air mixture leaving your engine by turning more of it into power.

Visit the links referred to above and look closely at the cylinder heads and piston tops for signs of incomplete combustion. It usually shows up as a lighter color around the edge of the cylinder chamber. This is where pockets of fuel have not burned. It is consistently obvious from the photographic evidence sent to us that Grooved engines burn fuel well into the 'corners' of the cylinder.

So, the main benefit of the Groove is not a specific single change, but the combination of power and efficiency improving effects. One tester even went to far as to test an engine with unGrooved and then Grooved heads, but kept the tuning exactly the same. He was attempting to 'isolate' the Groove's effect and got less than dramatic results. Even though this test didn't take advantage of the Groove's main strengths (a 'worst case scenario' in other words) the dyno still showed a +6 hp power increase and a smoothing of the power band through all rpm's.

No one disputes that increased compression, increased turbulence and reduced temperature are all 'good' things for improving performance of the typical internal combustion engine, yet on the web, people who are not familiar with this modification still claim that the grooves must be 'magic' and therefore unscientific and impossible.

As you look around this site, recognize the countries represented and the diversity of opinion and methodology. No one here has been selected, edited, censored or motivated by any promise from Somender-Singh.com. Each individual is independent and wholly driven by their own curiosity and desire for better performance. Since Somender is not yet 'selling' his Patent, there is no monetary gain available from performing the groove (other than better running engines), yet people keep doing it. At any time, anyone is welcome to provide evidence of any negative impact from grooving an engine properly and their testing results will be posted just like everyone else's.

These experiments are usually run on 'beaters' with nothing left to lose. As soon as the groove brings these vehicles back to life, you will often see that person go on to perform Groovings on their daily driver, then their favorite cars and the 'race day specials'.

No snake oil, just clean oil, and clean power.

If you are interested to explore what this really means for the whole world, you can see a YouTube video of Martynelli from Spain cutting a nice pretty groove with nothing more than a hacksaw blade, triangular file and some sand paper, in less than four minutes!

And for anyone who thinks that having two unmodified squish areas are superior, have a look at flat plate dynamics. Place two sheets of plywood face to face and try to pull the top one off rapidly. Better yet, get a friend to help you pull it straight up evenly! A great deal of force is required to overcome the vacuum created. Now drill a few dozen holes (or cut a long notch) into the top sheet and you will then be able to pull off the top sheet easier and still produce 'turbulence' in the region.

During the first phases of combustion, gasses expanding into the Groove with combustion forming a 'jet' aimed at the cylinder wall produces any extra turbulence lost from compromising the integrity of a flat squish area (and then some).

Drag or momentum, which would you want powering your piston?

~ It holds Good to this day !

Our R & D work on IC Engines relating to Performance & Efficiency over the last few decades led us to unlocking the mysteries of chaotic combustion limited by higher compression ratios in IC Engines. The outcome of my Discovery was ~ A Low Cost basic elementary design change to the face of the combustion chamber to over come present day short comings and opening yet another window into high compression I C engine COMBUSTION !
Lots of eyebrows have gone up since ! Mostly in disbelief !? As to how such an elementary design concept was over looked in the last century of I C Engine development directly relating to - Improvements in COMBUSTION Efficiency out of existing Fuels !!!

This Incremental Invention induces progressive Turbulence in the compressing charge followed by Multipoint Ignition during the Combustion phase resulting in : ALTCBC - ACCELERATED LAMINAR TOTAL CLEAN BURN COMBUSTION !!! ?

Our Objectives of disclosing our findings are :

    1) Hoping to induce Turbulence in the Intellectual (conservative ) Scientific Community deeply involved in the study of Combustion.

    2) To cause Ignition in the minds of Technical Editors of leading Automobile Magazines highlighting Performance and new Concepts.

    3) AND ~ Awaiting the reactions from the Automobile Industry - In the form of loud " Explosions " !!! ?

The World is constantly on the lookout for any type of development that can bring down inputs of fuel and further improve the outcomes in useable Power & Performance with the least outcomes of emissions & CO2 spewing out of IC Engine COMBUSTION !

    ____________________

As A workable solution we offer this "Street Smart " Elementary Design Change that can bring about better efficiency out of existing IC Engines with no other changes necessary on the production line.

This design change to Combustion Chambers accelerates the process of Combustion by burning up the charge more complete close to tdc in a much shorter duration achieving further improvements in Thermal Efficiencies out of the same quantity of fuel. This elementary design change is applicable to two & four cycle spark ignition & compression ignition I C engines. After this simple design change, steeper pressures are derived at earlier crank angles resulting in pronounced torque outputs in the absence of Ping & Detonation. After seeing the displayed burn patters on the face of the cylinder head & piston crowns, it is evident, a lot more air / fuel mixture is turning into flame & expansion past tdc on the power stroke.

It is this " Combustion or Explosion " taking place within the cylinder close to tdc ~ That this " Incremental Invention " relates to - And Not the Gadgetry or the materials that surrounds the combustion chamber itself !!!

Once the burn rate of this Explosion ? Is accelerated minus the detonation or preignition inside compact combustion chambers - COMBUSTION gets " Superlative & Laminar "! The punch is distinctly different & better from existing patterns of kayotic combustion in I C Engines.

Transformations and road tests have been successfully carried out in over 40 different types of two and four cycle I C Engines of different makes & models over the years. ( In recent times many more have experienced the same effects on many modern engines in different parts of the world )

The Distinct advantages noticed after carrying out this simple design change to existing Combustion Chamber are as follows :
Deriving more torque & power output from the same drawn-in charge at any given RPM.
Lowered emissions of HC, CO, NOx are noticed from idle speeds onwards, emissions of CO have dropped off from 1.25 to 2 % to as low as 0.10 to 0.30 % CO in engines featuring no form of catalytic converters.
Lowered fuel consumption through the entire operating range ( improvements noticed are from 20 to 40% over standard engines depending on engine loading and RPM )
Improved Torque & BHP through an ultrawide useable power band with no form of Detonation or Preignition under load.
Two cycle engines produce more lowend torque than four cycles of equivalent capacities. Four-cycle SI engines produce more lowend torque than normal aspirated diesels of equivalent capacities or more. ( results reflected during simple road tests, operating in top gear and overdrive with load ).
Diesels go further by producing brute Torque & Turbos come on quicker with lesser throttle openings. ( Means better fuel efficiency and no smoke )
Lowered engine operating temperatures are noticed due to lesser absorption of heat resulting out of higher flame velocities burning through the compressed charge in the shortest possible time frame close to tdc.
Lowered intake and combustion noises are noticed, under load due to laminar stable combustion taking place with no form of preignition or detonation.
Reduced flame blowbys are evident past piston rings and valve seats due to the absence of detonation and preignition leading to clean burn combustion which intern extend lubricating oil life and causes lesser distortion of critical engine components ensuring consistency in compression ratios during extreme operating conditions.
Extended engine & components life due to lower operating temperatures and oils retaining their lubricating properties for longer periods accumulating far lesser carbon particles in them.
Greatly reduced carbon deposits and sludge are noticed in combustion chambers & its surroundings, spark plugs and intake / exhaust systems and the internals of the sump during specified intervals of maintenance / overhauls.

Misfire is totally eliminated due to proper ignition and subsequent combustion.

Engines can now idle smoothly with no hesitation at much lower RPM's producing the least CO2 & emissions out of combustion.

Air fuel ratios can also be leaned down much further without experiencing explosions in the intake & air cleaner.

Ultra lean mixes of air & fuels fail to over heat engine / water temperatures or cause misfire due to the faster burn.

Normal DI diesels behave like SI engines with low noise & a wider and more pronounced torque band !

Turbos come alive from a lot lower revs through a much wider band.

In all, the engines go smoother due to lower combustion noises building up inside the combustion chamber and the inlet manifold giving a new feel to driving and riding.

Bonus being able to use higher compression ratios with no knock or ping on regular fuels.

Over a 150 machines of all varieties have been TRANSFORMED over the years - Reflecting the same consistency in Performance & Fuel Consumption spewing out lot lesser emissions without a single negative feature or drawbacks after some having covered in excess of 100,000+ Kms.

To sum it all up ! ~ " In A Nutshell" !!! - This design change results in immense torque & superlative power through the widest possible operating band, in absolute silence, giving " Driving & Riding " a new " Dimension " over existing designs.

CONCLUSIONS: Ignition and subsequent accelerated combustion in the charge results in greater build ups of progressive pressures inside the combustion chamber for every degree of crankshaft rotation past TDC, - i.e., Rapid - Clean Burn - Combustion - resulting in rapid expansions taking place with no form of Detonation or Preignition or explosions during the combustion phase -
Ultimately ALTCBC (Accelerated Laminar Total Clean Burn Combustion) builds up enormous torque at earlier crank angles to get the best leverage out of combustion at any given RPM in comparison to existing designs ~ Be it a Two or Four strokes, fired up by Petrol or Diesel or a concoction of CNG / LPG / Propane / Alcohol / Hydrogen or Bio-Fuels alike.

No past "Patent" or present design of Combustion Chambers in I C Engines has any physical resemblance or operates on the principles of - "Accelerated Laminar Total Clean Burn Combustion", ( ALTCBC) eliminating preignition & detonation under load and achieving improved Thermal Efficiencies.
This Incremental Invention betters I C Engine Combustion along with greatly Lowered Emissions & Green House Gases. We hope this Low Cost ~ Street Smart ~ Effective Design catches the attention of the Hundreds of Millions of IC Engines in use today with a hope of Lowering fuel consumption, Emissions & CO2 out of them. This happens to be - THE NEED OF THE HOUR !!! Globally ! Considering the Mess we Earthlings have created over time and are drifting into ~ Not knowing the surprises that await us in the near future ! ?

We would be happy to jointly pen an article to enlighten the World of this new concept that can bring about a change !!! in Academic Interests.

We would also be happy to take up a joint discussion to study the merits of my simple ready to use Patented Technology in the interests of the Global Motoring Community.

    Thanking you Sir,

    Warm regards,
    Somender Singh

My experiments over the years lead me to some definite conclusions & proof of improvements in the area of Thermal efficiency gains - Both DI Diesels & Petrol engines respond to this design change almost in the same manner - If done on the piston crown ! Provided the Piston has a Dish. You can run petrol engines incredibly lean without any hick-ups or heating-up or stalling !

( My simple way to prove this is to remove the lean setting carb from my modified engines & bolt it on to a stock / std engine & watch the fun - you just cannot get it started up - unless you keep blibbing the acceleration pump - next the water temp will go through the roof in minutes )

Back on my engine the same carb with the ultra lean jets will fire up almost instantly - same with the DI Diesels - instant start - with smoke & noise levels way down too !

I have seen just one deep groove is enough to define a total change. More the compression the better it responds - If you ever took a stock engine and just shaved 60 thou off the head and ran it on a stock cam & fuel - The end is not far away !

This design needs - Piston to head (Cold) at least 0.060" + for comfort ! You can drive them as slow as they can go, in top gear with out any jerks - Or hear any bells ringing - as you step on the gas ! You will Just notice Torque flowing out ! I have seen this happen in 2 valve heads with small squish bands too - the same effects with real large ones also - the same goes with 3 valve & 4 valve heads too - A little squish on 4 valve heads is enough to get it to work wonders - you don't need to play around with a lap-top to re-tune any of these engines ! Strange but true ! As this is a complementary design to present day ICE's with the least inputs.

The plugs are a good indicator of what is happening inside - If you go real lean & mean - the plug's outer ring starts to turn blue - so does the cylinder wall ??? - But nothing ever happens to the piston crown, the valves or the seats ???? - as the water & oil temp just stays there - in case you have removed the thermostat - The temp will come even lower as you pick up speed ! This way, the Oils last out much much longer !

This " One " single design change to combustion chambers is enough to bring about a total change to the age-old IC Engine !

Mr. Rudy, a die hard - *Huds Only* - has freaked out after he modified his - Out of the Box - Hudson 6 - Twin carb engine ! He just cant believe it - He shaved off 0.040" of a brand new L head - placed a single groove per cylinder - & the death rattle never came back - he tells me - he can comfortably go up slopes in top gear doing 400 rpm on regular gas ! Without hearing any form of Ping ! Or see the temp go up !

All this must be sounding like impossible stuff - Most of it comes close to " Believe It Or Not " Stuff ! ???

From Day one - everyone is just stuck on Dyno results - Full throttle - Plotted Graph ! Is what we want to see Mr. Singh ! Do we see any gains ? ... If not, it does not work !

I would like to ask the World - How often does any one drive at full throttle? - Maybe at the Gasoline Alley - but certainly not all day in and day out at full throttle. Driveablity along with flowing Torque is what the World is looking out for ! It needs to start from rock bottom - zero rpm - this is exactly what the groove delivers & achieves ! Automatics just shift far more easily into higher gears while the rpm's stay low - Because you don't need to ' lay on the gas ' that much - lesser throttle applications are bound to give you the best fuel economy !

With my design you will pick up the desired speed - the potential limit lies with the lowest Differential ratio you can get your hands on !! You can actually drive cars at idle speed in top gear ! Nobody will believe this either ? Unless seen !

We do it every day. Read the pages. You can too. From a lawnmower to a snowmobile to hot rods and daily drivers of sorts. The groove works, and you will hear more about this idea that cannot be supressed because it is not a complex design or a riddle nor is it a " Secret" ! ( Any more ! )

Anyone can do it and this has been proven by the people who are visiting our website & other forums. Dear readers, you are also capable of performing what I do with a jewelers saw and a set of small triangular and round files.

For those who need numbers, Dyno tests data are available - more in the website.

This will be a good test because the engine has been running for two years with ported heads. The grooves are the only change made.

The squish clearance will also remain the same as before the grooves were cut. The block was zero decked when the engine was built. The same thickness (0.040") head gasket will be used.

Kerry races a 80's model Camaro with a mild flat top 355 and a flat tappet cam. The engine has been running great; times in 11.0's at 122 mph.

A broken rocker arm stud prompted a rebuild. Kerry's only complant is the oil gets black after 20 runs. He heard about the grooves and asked if they would help.

The burn pattern was good but ended about 1/2" before the bore on the opposite side of the plug. I believe this is the area where conditions for combustion are unfavorable resulting in unburned fuel passing the rings. With the grooves this problem should be eliminated. The fluid flow during combustion created by the groove will initiate more heat during the early stages of combustion. The resulting faster hotter flame combined with mixture motion in the squish region will create a condition that is favorable for combustion all the way to the bore on the opposite side from the plug. This will eliminate the raw fuel that is being blown past the rings.

I ported the heads when the engine was first built, during the rebuild the ports and chambers were cleaned with a sandpaper roll and the grooves were cut.

The owner of this awesome Corvette convertible was awarded No Problem Raceway "Driver of the Year" for the 2005 racing season. His wheel standing Corvette, running grooved LT1 cylinder heads, capped off the season with a win at the Christmas race in the Non Electronics bracket.

    Congratulations

    More Details Coming Soon

    This was an interesting project.
    A 1965 corvette convertible, 2600 lbs with a
generation II LT1 small block from the late
90's. The engine has been bored and stroked
to 383 CI. It has a modified tuned port
    injection with an aftermarket computer
controlling the fuel and spark. With a three
speed automatic it leaves the line on the
back two wheels carrying the front wheels
    for 40 to 50 feet.
The benefits of the groove were immediate.
    Reduced fuel consumption

    Improved idle quality

    Lower ET and more MPH

"The one thing that impressed me the most is how the oil runs clean. I'm changing it because it's time, but it looks like the day I put it in!"

FAQ: What do the Groves do?

"Without grooves, the combustion is incomplete and unburned fuel remains in the cylinder. This unburned fuel is still expanding during the exhaust stroke; with the engine idling at the end of the exhaust stroke the expanding unburned gases flow past the intake valve into the intake manifold causing poor idle.

With the grooved cylinder heads combustion is more complete leaving little unburned fuel behind, more of the fuel is used to generate power and less is used to generate heat. (That’s also why the engines run cooler). With the modified heads little or no unburned fuel remains during the exhaust stroke. With less unburned fuel to expand during the overlap period the gasses flowing past the intake valve are reduced resulting in improved idle quality."

FAQ: What kind of tools do you use to make the grooves?

How do you know how deep to make them?
    How long to make them?
And Where to put the grooves on both two strokes and four strokes?

    ANSWER:
The first grooves were started with a jewelers saw and finished out with a small triangular file.

The depth is dependent upon creation of a straight shot from the plug to the squish area.

    Length is also.

Usually in symmetrical orientation. Every engine is different and research will need to be done on all scales. Grooves may be added and benefits received until a certain point. Next time do one less.

I've heard of these, a long time ago.

Apparently does help cool down the combustion chamber somewhat, and on older engine designs, can increase power a little, if done right. Seems to work best on old two-stroke engines.

For modern designs with "swirl" already built into the air flow from the intake valve, probably not so much... and there's a possibility that you're trading operating temperature for increased thermal stress on exposed sharp peaks on the groove edges, which may cause hot-spotting and eventual eating away of the surface.

It'd be interesting to see how a grooved two-valve combustion chamber compares to a more modern four-valve chamber. If the grooves work as well as promised, it could mean cost-savings in manufacturing engines... use less valves, less moving parts, and use the grooves to increase efficiency.

What I haven't seen, though, is data on how grooving affects NOx emissions... that'll be the interesting part... and lower EGTs may interfere with catalytic light up, a big issue, considering cats are required in western countries.
