Another Simple Solution - without changing your ICE engine... just a little modification probably on the timing... and some additional parameter adjustment to your ECU and an additional Low Pressure or Hi Pressure fuel tank.

And who is going to pay to setup the hydrogen station in your garage?
Not to mention hydrogen by volume is less than half the energy density as gasoline. High pressure insulated tanks will fill up the entire rear end of a typical sedan but only have half the range of a full tank of gas.
So if you have a Corolla converted to hydrogen, it will only seat two people (driver included), only have the range to drive 100 to 125 km on a single tank of hydrogen and have the cargo space to carry a only single bag of groceries.
And this doesn't include the problem and cost of making, compressing and storing hydrogen before pumped into the vehicle.
This is a "solution" which some people haven't really thought through well enough. Some countries can afford it because they are compelled by certain national or international clean air treaties or similar.

Think people.
If hydrogen is such a "simple solution", why hasn't the first world countries implemented this so-called "simple solution" beyond the experimental scale?

Summary
During 2003 and 2004, the Norwegian energy company Norsk Hydro together with the German wind turbine manufacturer Enercon, built a wind/hydrogen plant in the municipality of Utsira, Norway. The plant produce hydrogen through an electrolyser when there is excess wind energy available, and then provide electricity to domestic customers via a fuel cell and a hydrogen combustion engine when the wind turbine slows or stops. Utsira is the world’s first large-scale test of a Stand-Alone renewable energy system where the energy balance is provided by stored hydrogen.
Utsira has been in operation since winter 2004/2005, and the paper presents results and experience from this first year in operation. After approximately one year of operation an average availability of approximately 90% have been achieved. The high availability have been achieved without having designed the system with redundancy in key components e.g. two hydrogen generators or two wind turbines. The design and operation of the system have given invaluable insight for further development of wind-hydrogen systems. A extension of the Utsira project have been decided to test a new type of electrolyser based on PEM technology with a higher operational flexibility as well as greatly reduced footprint.

Ironic that a "simply solution" would require such a huge and complex setup. It actually be more efficient to use the wind turbine to charge batteries of electric cars and light up homes than to be used to generate hydrogen (via electrolysis) to be used in ICE or expensive & commercially unproven fuel-cell cars.
The test project ended in 2008.

Yes Ironic indeed...
Like how the Incandescent bulb standard transformed into the the flourescent standard for lighting... Such tranformation of lighting standard costed millions of dollars in testing and r & d.
And now the soon to be LED lighting standard - which also took money to develop...
All simple - yet - not available right away. It still took for these simple ideas decades to come into truition... not to mention the resistance, cost and effort in putting them into mainstream.
Bottomline;
Non-renewable resources will always be commercially protected until reaching critical mass or collapse.
Renewable resources requires simple solutions... as Einstein would put it "keep it simple, but not that simple."
It doesnt mean that if a gate is too small for an elephant to enter, we can never put the elephant on the other side of the fence?
There are only few absolutes... we are not trying to be ahead of the world in terms of groundbreaking ideas, but it doesn't mean we can't or at least be at par.
The idea here is to entice people to think of what can be... not put down a hammer on any possibilities and simply keep everyone in conformity to the norms. This will only make us like zombies.
If everyone says the world is flat... then it doesn't hurt one to agree. It is always the one who thinks differently that will earn the arrows directed at him.
I don't speak for the proponents of a Hydrogen Economy... I am merely encouraging enthusiasm among people who can exercise their imagination on the possibilities.
I am one who prefers to drive without AC... but it is impossible to enjoy driving without AC in Manila... because every vehicle you encounter emits noxious exhaust.
We can easily stop this thread if you wish... and let the readers remain in the dark. Keeping Pinoys more behind in terms of freedom of imagination.
Without imagination... No Vision.... Without a Vision.... No road map... no Road Maps.... means no direction.
I probably don't have a simple solution to a worldwide crisis... but who does anyway?
At any rate, in the end, the Golden Rule applies... even in this aspect.
He who holds the gold - rules.

reminder lang po: we are living in a poor, developing country
the daily priority of much of the population is to avoid hunger
developing renewable energy sources isnt on the top ten priorities of most people here
we who are lucky enough to avoid hunger have the luxury of spending time on the net reading stuff...
and just coz we have access to information from the developed world doesnt mean we are at par with the developed world
pinoys sometimes forget how poor our country is
we watch western TV/movies, listen to western music, adopt western culture, lifestyle and thinking, feeling natin ka-level na natin ang mga western countries
some guy in Cali builds an electric sports car, so some guy in Manila thinks he can do the same thing
then the guy in Manila realizes he doesnt have the money to spend on such a project
unlike the developed world, they have govt funding and private venture capitalists looking to finance projects of hobbyists and inventors (another reminder we are NOT a developed country)
marunong din kami mag imagine dude
even without this thread
we got a lot of imagination too
thing is, we are in the wrong country
dito, we can imagine all we want here, pero hanggang imagination lang
unless gusto mo magpagawa ng body kit kay Atoy (you imagine, we create) hehehe
if you relocate to a developed country and do your imagining there, maybe may mangyayari paLast edited by uls; September 22nd, 2009 at 11:58 AM.

My imagination working and I just found the SIMPLEST solution to the so-called Worldwide Crisis.
Requires no genius or even pseudo science to do.
It's called ..... WALKING. Yeah for short distances you might as well just walk. Move to a residence closer to where you work and just walk your way to the office and back.
A little more investment and the next is ..... BIKING. Safety is the biggest issue. Let government make it safe for bikers. Cut the street and make dedicated bikelanes (visions of China).
And there is a bonus to both scenario.....HEALTHIER PEOPLE.
Di ba mas kaya ng poor country natin yun. But it will never happen. Why? CONIO MENTALITY.
