Other countries aren't that different. There is the racial discrimination between blacks and whites in the USA. There is also the ethnic discrimination against asians in many communities in the USA. There is the ethnic discrimination in Indonesia which lead to many personal tragedies in the last few years when it reached crisis levels.

We all might be collectively called Filipinos but do not mistake the Filipinos to be "one people" because Filipinos are made up by people of different cultures and ethnic backgrounds. There are the Christians, Protestants, Muslims and Buddhists. There are the Ilocano, Pangasinense, Kapampangan, Tagalog, Bicolano, and Visayan. There are the Americans, Chinese, European, and Spanish who have long been living in the Philippines for decades and centuries.

We aren't "pare-pareho". More than anything else, we could probably say we are "Pinoy" because of the diversity & richness of the cultural and ethnic backgrounds we have.

    2 words: Human Race

it's called human race coz it is a race among humans, among nations

it's a marathon, but there's no finish line

the race keeps going and going as long as the Earth is still able to support human life

the race ends when humans become extinct

    In Asia, in this RACE

the nations of Japan, Korea, China, India, Thailand, Malaysia are already ahead of the Philippines

face it, we have been left behind

unless those nations ahead of us screw up, they will always be ahead of us

gagayain natin ang ginawa ng Japan, Korea, China, India?

ya sure, we can do that

but by the time we get to where they are now, they will still be ahead of us

    ano akala natin?

    stationary sila?

kung tayo gusto natin umunlad, sila ba hinde?

kahit maunlad na sila, they still keep improving

face it, we have been left behind, and we will always be behind

    the race CANNOT be restarted

    there's no second try

the Phils. was number 1 in Asia decades ago

    the Phils. SCREWED UP

the only way the Phils. will get ahead of Malaysia, Thailand, India, China, S.Korea, Japan is if all of them screw up

    Chances are, THEY WON"T

    i'm being realistic

i view the world from orbit

    and that's what i see

Know what the Phils. looks like from orbit?

i mean, know what the role of the Phils. is in the world?

a provider of skilled and unskilled labor

    a manpower agency

    that's it

go ahead, build your 100% pinoy engine

    build your 100% pinoy car

that will only get you on TV Patrol and in the major dailies (well, if that's your goal hehehe)

but that won't put the Philippines in the big leagues

the requirement for being in big leagues is no longer if you can build your own car or engine

    come on... it's not 1909... it's already year 2009 A.D.?!

if you can build your own engine or car now... it is sooooo NOT a big deal

other Asian countries are already sending satellites into orbit, space probes into... ummm... space

    India:

India Ends Lunar Mission After Losing Probe Signal
    http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?p...d=anHW54NyN9Y4
Aug. 31 (Bloomberg) -- India’s space agency ended an $82 million mission to map the surface of the moon after failing to restore contact with its unmanned Chandrayaan I craft.

Contact was lost with the probe two days ago and scientists at the Indian Space Research Organisation were unable to restore communications, said S.K. Shivkumar, the director of the ISRO’s Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network. The craft began orbiting the moon last November.

“The mission has been terminated,” Shivkumar said by telephone from Bangalore, adding computers on the craft failed.

Chandrayaan I, or “Moon Craft,” was launched on Oct. 22 last year to map the lunar terrain as a first step toward landing an unmanned rover there by 2012. The moon is again the focus of international exploration 40 years after American Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on its surface, with the U.S., China, South Korea and Russia planning manned or unmanned missions in coming years.

“We survived for 315 days which is a good record. Many such experiments have burnt within a month in the past,” state- run broadcaster Doordarshan cited ISRO chief Madhavan Nair as saying yesterday.

“We are disappointed with the development, but have managed to get a large volume of data,” including 70,000 images of the moon, Nair told reporters.
India launched a freaking moon probe!

and we are still dreaming of a 100% pinoy car and a 100% pinoy engine?

    we are sooooo far behind

Well said.....me think we are just a step in front of Bangladesh and Cambodia. Vietnam is currently having longer strides than us.

If we do not f____ed, we could be a nation of artesans.

    But first,control our birth rate.

Want to get ahead? Social engineering is the first order of the day.

    amazing

    di ko kaya yan

i cannot think of the Phils. in isolation

it's like the Phils. is not part of the global community

it's like the Phils. is not competing with other nations

well, i understand that many pinoys don't look at the big picture

and by not looking at the big picture, one doesnt see where the Philippines' rank is in the global race

and that has a calming effect

di mo alam kung talo o panalo ka eh hehehe

so you take your sweet time

do things at your own pace

    not mind the other competitors

who cares about the others right?

what you don't know won't hurt you

    ignorance is bliss

    Yes. The Filipino can.....
The problem is.... the Philippines cannot.

Filipinos can excel individually but as a nation we do not seem to move forward.

Remember the Roman Empire who ruled Europe, part of Middle east and North Africa.

China was among the most riches nation centuries ago.

Look at the British Empire during the reign of Queen Victoria, almost three quarter of the population was under her.

Not to mention the Soviets power of the 20th century.

We still have a chance, if you believe in our capability.

I work overseas only 3 days in a week likewise my wife. I'm earning twice as much or maybe more compared to ordinary skilled worker in the Philippines. And one thing I'm happy to share with you. There are more Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Pakistani, Korean and European working overseas whether skilled or unskilled.

Taga gupit ng hair namin, Korean, Greeks, British and Australian.
Tagalinis ng kuku ko ay Chinese, Thailander at Malaysian.

What else... You have to be happy of what we are... Be proud of what the role of Philippines in the world. Look at Great Britain, they give importance to their skilled and unskilled labor in their Commonwealth Countries.

ya we all know empires rise and fall

    so what's your point?

wait for the dominant power in the world to fall and the Philippines becomes the next dominant power?

wanna bet it won't be the Philippines?

    ---

this isnt about kung anong lahi ang na-experience mo na nagsilbi sayo

    this isnt about individual people

any individual from any race can become successful, and any individual from any race can screw up and end up cleaning toilets for a living

    that's not the point

this is NOT about individual people

    this is about entire countries

this is about countries competing with each other for survival... for limited resources

in case some people still don't get it, we do compete with other countries

we compete for oil, food, everything (no country is so self sufficient that it doesnt need anything from other countries)

to buy oil, food, and everything else, we need dollars

    we all compete for dollars

everyone has their own way of earning dollars

some countries are very good at making stuff like cars and flat screen TVs, so they export them and earn dollars.

while some countries are not very good at making anything, except babies, so they export their own people

my point is, the Philippines is not competitive

it can't produce anything the world wants... except people

that's why it became the world's manpower agency

and the president of the manpower agency goes all over the world begging world leaders to hire its people

and we are supposed to be proud of that?

correct! discrimination is the disease that everybody wants to get rid off racial or ethnic or ano pa man. it is not something to be proud of. our individual and preferencial differences gives us our unique characteristic as Filipinos. i know about the regional groupings we have in the philippines. it also exists in other countries. that's normal. to us, the germans are all germans, even though they themselves have different regional groupings like us. e.g. bavarians, franconians. to them, filipinos are the same.

the word "pinoy" is not different from the word "pilipino" - which made me agree to your last sentence quoted above.

Guys, maybe some of you were absent when your teachers were lecturing about our recent history. Let me refresh you...

The Philippines was way ahead of the asian countries fourty/fifty years ago. Unfortunately given when we got left to our own devices, that status of being most advance developed country in the region shifted to becoming the "sickman" of the region.

Yes. The Filipino can... The Filipino can f__k up big time better than anyone else in the region.

Maybe if the "Filipinos" can stop being so short sighted in everything including the justice system.

It all started with the kind of people we elect as our leaders.
We need someone with a vision and a plan. Then have the courage and the will to see its implementation.

We need to look how South Korea did it in the last 30 years. Their chaebols and our oligarchs have some common characteristics. Not to mention the role of their military in the political field before.

And yeah...the justice system should also be rectified.

Yes, we have leaders like that right now. Unfortunately the vision and plan they have in mind is to enrich themselves by robbing the country's coffers until it runs dry.

Pinoys are laid-back, happy-go-lucky, leisurely people

we like to enjoy life a bit too much (work sucks )

    we are very good consumers

    but not very good producers

we are a consumption driven country

a country is a direct reflection of its people

    look around...

    there are malls everywhere

there are retailers everywhere (sari sari stores to supermarkets, stores, shops, kahit saan may tindahan)

but we don't see a lot of factories

coz we import a lot of what we consume

our income generator is the 10-12 percent of the population working abroad, sending billions of dollars to the Phils.

the money goes to end-user consumption

my point is, that's our evolution

our economy evolved thru the decades to become what it is today

our economy is powered by domestic consumption

we are the complete opposite of Japan, S.Korea, Taiwan, and all the other exporters here in Asia whose economies are powered by external consumption

that's why our economy isnt very much affected by the global recession unlike the other Asian exporters whose economies went into recession

you can try to fight evolution

you can try to turn the Phils. into a country that produces more than it consumes

Japan is fighting its own evolution

Japan has been trying to stimulate domestic consumption for years

    nothing's happening... they're still trying

Japan's economy was designed to produce goods for the world

their factories were designed to produce more goods than its people can consume

their factories were designed to produce goods for the entire world

there are people here who wanna fight evolution too

they wanna turn the Phils. into a producer of cars and engines

they are betting the Philippines will become like Japan or S.Korea or China or India

    good luck dudes

    my money is on evolution

    i wouldnt bet against it

It's all just time lag, we'll be back on track before this century ends.

Does anyone remember the Y2K bike?
For the sake of those who don't know it, it's a motorcycle powered by a jet engine that came off a Bell helicopter. It's a mix of one-off and off-the-shelf parts. Now why would anyone build a jet powered bike? It can't turn like a bike should, maintenance in the long run would cost as much as a new regular bike, it's noisy, it makes so much heat, blah blah blah, and only a couple of folks would probably buy 'em...but what the hell, they can make it, so they did.

Some talented Filipino engineers could also make an engine locally just for kicks. Why the hell not...

The Filipino Lata. Lighten up folks...

This thread has been through so much...from engineering, economics, and finally sociology. Why kill the idea? If Ferdinand Magellan just quit sailing because his crew were all lazy, what would the world be like?

Engine design at accessories? kaya na ba?
