For those who are going for a complete engine overhaul, take this opportunity to go Evans Waterless Coolant & stop worrying about periodic coolant swaps. Evans CANNOT be mixed w/ water. System should ideally be free of water upon switching.

    Litmus test? Where to avail?
Actually, 3 - 4 years ako mag flushing. Or is that too long already?

Coolant degradation varies from 1 vehicle to another.....Use a digital pH meter, sir.

More often than not, water pump talaga ang salarin sa overheating. Ended up replacing the radiator (well due narin naman talaga for replacement) thermostat and radiator cap. Water pump pala ang sira. Pero ok lang at least my cooling system is top notch again.

GMB water pump 2,800 bili ko. Not bad. Magandang brand na raw ito.

Saan mo napagawa ang water pump replacement?

Hi, just for my learning lang...I understand it is a 2009 Sorento with proper Coolant on the cooling system, so how many km the engine had accumulated before that pump impeller was totally eaten out? Would just like to know para sa mga old vehicle ko to estimate when should I replace my water pump din. Thanks.

It is generally recommended to replace the pump when you replace the timing belt.

    The reason is...

But not all old vehicles have timing belt...mine is a timing chain which probably would not need any changing. Would just like to get a real example that after this KM run -n of the vehicle with proper coolant on them would eat out all the impellers of the pump.

In that case, I think it will do up to 100,000 km. Our CR-V 98 is running at 200,000 km. I made a mistake of not replacing it when the timing belt was replaced. I wasn't there so I really forgot to mention it. My brother seldom use it so I don't think it will bother him.

Let's wait for the other guy to give us his odometer reading when he replaced his pump. That should serve as a reference for us.

    My odo is 102,304

Like what I said before, partly my negligence. Two years ago, my car almost overheated. Radiator was then converted to brass tank. That was the time I did not bother to add proper coolant. Just distilled water.

Then by January 2018, radiator started leaking again. Most probably dahil na sa water pump. Naubos na impeller. Causing high heat and pressure. That’s why I bought a cheap obd scanner/reader sa lazada to monitor my coolant temp. And I was bit surprised mataas talaga readings. Ranging from 98 to 110c city driving.

Changing the thermostat and radiator cap did not solve my problem. Only when they checked my water pump... and the impeller was gone.

Timing chain yung engine ko. The water pump can easily be replaced.

Maybe with proper coolant and religious flushing of the cooling system, di pa masisira ang water pump at 100k odo.

I even bought a surplus fan clutch. Thinking it was my fan clutch. But it was not.

I suggest, when your car is already old, check the water pump first. I tested my thermostat and it’s still working. Kahit sobrang rusty na tingnan. It’s still functional. Di pa pala kelangan palitan.

    But no regrets replacing everything.

Thanks...wow fairly not that high mileage pala. I've seen much worse corrosion issue where the water channel is literally with thick lined brownish corrosion byproducts on them. Your's seem still in good shape yet the impellers were eaten out. It seems in our cooling system the impeller pala pinaka weaker metals/materials on them. Maybe due to it's spinning motion, Erosion and corrosion literally will eat the metal away.

cavitation pa. aside from corrosion protection the additives in the coolant also provides some cavitation protection.

Imagine it can go unnoticed. Naawa ako sa ride ko. Most probably mga ilang months wala na pala siyang impeller. Nagkataon city driving lang ako this year. Last long distance ko Nov 2017 pa. Di naman nag overheat.

My temp gauge starts to move past halfway at 115c. Nilalagnat na pala yung engine ko di lang namalayan kasi kahit 110c “normal” pa siya sa range.

Buti nalang walang damage sa head gasket. Ngayon sobrang okay na ng temps. 88c kahit hapon at stuck sa traffic. ✔️✔️✔️

By the way, my radiator is also new.
