VW's lineup is targeted to compete with the Japanese models. It cannot market itself as a premium German brand as it has a subsidiary meant to compete in that market - Audi. VW has so many subsidiaries that it competes with various manufacturers - Seat, Skoda, VW, Audi, Porsche, Lamborghini, Bugatti, Bentley, Ducati, etc.
