What are the chances of GTI coming to our shores?
Ayala Cars is a client.
I've also asked them this query. They mentioned that they do not have plans of bringing it here in the future because of the dirty gasoline.
Per them, they found our diesels more cleaner than gasoline (which I got surprised also.... thought that our diesel fuels are dirtier than gasoline....)
"if" it lands here in the philippines i'm sure they'll price it ridiculously high. no idea why filipinos are demanding it so badly even though it has tons of reliability issues. i guess it really shows how our market choose form over function.
Probably as an indent, per piece order, not as a standard item in the VW product lineup
The golf GTi currently on display at the PIMS is what we will get next year. Only difference is no sunroof but with push start and alcantara seat trims.
That's the point - the GTi will have a hard time gaining traction when it's priced at that level, competing against the more established STi.
The STi is an all-out speed demon, then there's the WRX for the weekend spirited drivers at a much lower price. Not to mention the 86, BRZ, GC, and MX5 all at lower prices.
The GTi in the Philippines doesn't have the same cult following it has in Europe. All I'm saying is that at the end of the day, I think the STi will outsell the GTi.

I'm currently in Germany and my current car is a 2015 Golf TSI. Not a GTI but man it's quick. That DSG gearbox is amazing.
I have also driven a Subaru before in Manila. Not an STI though. It's really quick and nice. But, it's just OK for me.
What annoys me though is that German spec cars are way better in terms of technology than Asian spec cars. It does not cost a lot to get those techs but I am wondering why not offer the "standard" technology in Philippines as well. If the VW cars coming in Manila are german assembled (I heard Tiguan or Touareg is directly assembled in Germany), then the VW cars might be a hit.
BUT, I am pretty sure european designed cars (minus the premium European cars like BMW, Audi, Merc) will not be a hit in PH. Unlike what most people think, they are not really into those big sedans like the big Bimmers. They really go crazy over the small hatches or the estate (station wagon) cars like the Golfs or the Meganes. I mean really crazy that's I guess 75% of cars you see in German roads. We Filipinos like our cars big. That's why we buy SUVs for our daily drivers. I am pretty sure we won't go crazy over estates like they do. Once you hit the Autobahn without speed limits, you would see those Golfs speeding away like crazy.
Thus, Golf GTI, while it might be really good, will not be a big hit in Manila. The design just doesn't attract the typical Filipino buyer. But believe me, those turbocharged Golfs are really good and scary fast.
The 1st 16 units in the Phils. have been sold out per Top Gear Phils. Units came to the dealers about 2 weeks ago; next batch will be on the 3rd week of March. The GTI is pricey but worth it. I heard, the waiting list is getting longer. Good I was lucky to be the among the first 16. I drove it to Subic today, and I have absolutely no regrets. Top build quality and performance. Compared to Subaru WRX STI? To me it is comparing apples to oranges. It should be compared to its direct competition which are the BMW 1 series and the MB A series, both hot hatchbacks....and these two won't ever win unless they are the M and AMG versions. To those who are price sensitive, the more affordable regular Golfs are coming by the 3rd quarter of 2015. FYI, the Golf and the GTI were co-named as Car of the Year last November 2014 in Detroit's NAIAS (North America Int'l Automotive Show).
i love that dsg...the controlled fart sound it makes...but still i want an r32..
Congrats on your ride. How is it compared to the wrx or the merc a250 sport? Do you feel its lacking power compared to the wrx? I
The A250 as of December isn't offered anymore by CATS; I may be wrong here coz the sales rep might just be pushing for what's on stock, the A200 at the time; the A200 is severely lacking compared to the GTI; A200 has 156hp/250 nm torque; while the GTI has 217 hp*4500-6200 rpm and 350 nm* 1,500 - 4,400 rpm. Compared to the wrx, check out this link: ************ - Philippine Car News, Car Reviews, Car Features, Car Buyer's Guide and Car Prices. notice, the WRX has 268 hp*5600 rpm and and 350nm* 2400 to 5200 rpm. The GTI will experience torue at lower levels and therefore can offset the 268 hp of the WRX which is realized at a higher rpm. Ergo, power is not lacking at all, perhaps on a straight line race, wrx can beat the GTI, but it will be a very good fight; handling, steering, very quick gear change all point to the GTI as better. Even European and US comparos would usually favor the GTI as the overall winner. In speed alone perhaps the wrx has the slight advantrage.
