The Bee Gees, Kitarō, and Led Zeppelin Could Not Perform in Singapore in the 1970s Because of a Hair Campaign | Vintage Everyday
    January 01, 2018

A ban on long hair once existed in Singapore. In the 1960s, a Singapore government policy forbidding any male to sport long hair went into effect. This was in response to the growing popularity of the hippie subculture worldwide; the government deemed such an influence to be negative and detrimental to the country's development.

In 1974, an anti-long hair drive called Operation Snip Snip (yes, it really was called that), was carried out in Singapore. During that time, men with long hair (i.e. hair below the collar, covering the ears, forehead and eyelashes) were seen as untidy and deviant, potentially disrupting social order.

What this entailed was that civil servants who refused to cut their hair short would have their employment terminated.

Posters were also put up around government agencies’ offices that stipulated that “males with long hair will have their need attended to last”. The posters also appeared in different languages.

Visitors who refused to cut their long hair were also turned away at immigration. At the Woodlands checkpoint, visitors were made to do quick haircuts at a barber stall nearby.

The music scene was also affected because of this policy on long hair. Among others, the Bee Gees, Kitarō, and Led Zeppelin all were forced to cancel their gigs in Singapore because they refused to accommodate the policy.

Jimmy Page and his new band Led Zeppelin had their show cancelled on 14th February, 1972 because they refused to cut their long hair. Also in the same year the Bee Gees were all here in Singapore to play their music but were forced home immediately after performing on stage at the National Theatre on March, 21st because their hair were too long.

The campaign gradually eased off in the 1980s.

It's not banned... You're just not allowed to sell it.

The sidewalks of Singapore do not have chewing gum black spots.

The sidewalks of Metro Manila are covered with black spots.

i wouldn't know. i can't see enough of the sidewalk surface sometimes. it's covered by sidewalk vendors and their wares.
and some sidewalks of metro manila, can cause bone fractures to its users, because of the drastically un-even surfaces.

We stayed in Hilton Singapore last 10 January 2018 for one night. The King Hilton Deluxe, and Twin Hilton Deluxe rooms are very nice. Highly recommended.

    Old article...

Singapore not clean, but 'cleaned' | Asia One

"It is a cleaned city thanks to an army of cleaners. For five million people in Singapore, we have 70,000 cleaners. In Taipei, there are three million people and 5,000 cleaners."

Singapore cleanliness is way overrated. When you look at the back of every residential flats, you'll see a big door for the garbage bin. It's very dirty around that area with lots of flies. Rats can also be seen running around. You really have to avoid the area or suffer smelling the stink. When you go to the public toilet, especially those at the MRT, it stinks of concentrated urine and dried human manure. I'd rather pee behind a big tree rather than suffer smelling the stench.

I prefer Japan as it's way cleaner and hygienic. People there are more refined and cultured rather than the crass Singaporeans.

I had the same conversation with my friend... (She was here for a 2 year assignment)

Kaka-ban pa lang ng plastic at that time and I was complaining to her that paper bags won't work! (Reusable bags are disgusting)

Like Singapore, Philippines should hire foreign workers for cleaning the metro and recycling!

Then she told me, bakit foreigner pa? Ang daming walang work sa Pinas.. and that's where the sad part comes in... Wala naman gustong maglinis, magtapon ng basura, mag segregate ng recyclables sa dumpsite.

I was staying at Fragance Hotel. It's in Geylang which is known for Red light district. Lmao! I thought it was a family hotel when I booked. Damn. Lol!

Every night I looked down at the windows and see guys haggling with a Russian prostitute. The taxi driver told me they are very cheap - $20, all in, including room. Lol!

I just love Singaporean food. The durians there is to die for. But, I think Thai Durians are way better.
