Are you saying it starts but won't move in either reverse or drive? In my experience when the A/T begins to break because of wear and tear it will still move in one of the other gears, i.e. you will lose reverse but still have a somewhat functional forward gear, it doesn't just break without warning unless it was completely abused.
How's your ATF level? Though, it would maybe be either extremely low or empty to have the symptoms you are mentioning.

What year is the 4runner? I assume it's not a local version since I don't think it was sold in the Philippines. If it's a US version you may have engaged the shift lock release, check your manual to see how it works. What color is the ATF? Do you have a burning or rancid smell coming from the hood or near your transmission? Is it or was it hard to move the shift lever from P-R-N-D? Have you tried putting it in 2 and 1 to see if it will move?Originally Posted by lazaro
Before it's current state did you come to a full stop before shifting the transmission? Have you ever used it like a manual transmission, i.e. shift down to engine brake? If you answer yes to the burning smell, hard shift and the last two questions then your tranny may be fried.

From the looks of it you may need a tranny rebuild. No movement at all when you step on the gas in any gear? Before this happened did you notice any slipping from the tranny, you step on the gas it revs but it's slow to react in actual acceleration. It's a 1994 so your tranny is 12 years already and with the traffic and heat in the Philippines it may have just died. But usually wear and tear doesn't cause you to lose all the gears, reverse is usually the first to go. Did you disconnect the batteries already and reconnect after 5-10 minutes to see if it will reset the electronics? What's the mileage on the truck?
If it's really dead you can buy tranny rebuild kits and just have a tranny shop fix it for you. Don't know the cost to do that for a Toyota, the one I killed was a BMW and it was less than 10 years old when the tranny died, but it cost me about $700 in 1996/7 probably alot cheaper in the Philippines though.
maybe the linkage (if equipped) to the selector, try mo engine off move the selector and let someone see below or open the tranny hump if the selector makes the linkage (if eqipped) is also moving.
as they say if the tranny is broken there should be movement somehow, but may be slow but there must be movement.

You shouldn't need a new tranny, you can get a master repair kit which will replace the friction & steel clutch plate, gaskets & seals, o-rings & sealing rings. I just checked the net and it goes for about $170 for the kit. Another thing you may want to check is the transmission control solenoid. Unfortunately I can't find any service bulletins for the tranny of your truck only the power steering recall.Originally Posted by lazaro
