There are not a lot of A/T trans cooling threads so I'll start a new one...

I need to install an external transmission cooler because we are always driving up the mountains and every bit of cooling counts. When doing high speed runs uphill eh the temp gauge is nearing the Hot position na.

I've already done a cooling system overhaul a few days ago - new rad, waterpump, fan clutch, hoses

    My options are:
    - a tube and fin 8 rows cooler similar to Hayden 405

    - a stacked plate 25 rows cooler from AliEx China

Am inclining sa tube and fin since it is available locally plus space would not be a problem, pwede ko ilagay sa front grille, near the skid plate, or under the passenger seat with a fan.

    Questions ko lang;

    1. Will I bypass the radiator or do a series? Andaming discussion nito sa net pero I have not made up my mind. Daily driver ko rin kasi so it is experiencing heavy traffic. Am pretty sure na kung ibypass ko ang rad, malaki ang temps na mababawas, pero can an external cooler handle the load?

    2. How will I install it?
    a. if series
    a1 trans > radiator > aux cooler > trans
    a2 trans > aux cooler > radiator > trans

    b. if bypass, will installing it in the front be enough? Or need a fan?

    Thanks!

Which vehicle is this? Some cars have built-in heatsinks for heat dissipation like my elantra. It does get warm when i go up the mountain. Some trucks have external oil coolers but thats because its for towing.

Although putting a fan would be good especially if you get caught in Metro Manila traffic.

there is no stress on the transmission when the clutch is disengaged ie Traffic

True. But not during stop and go traffic.

BTW, O.T. konti - parang marami ata taga TPC dito.

I'm also planning to install a external ATF cooler on our hi-ace van using my spare oil cooler from a pajero, kapapalit ko lang kasi ng surplus A/T tranny kaya gusto kong alagaan, base on my research ang high temperature ang madalas nakaka sira ng a/t tranny.
Ubra kaya ang oil cooler from a pajero as an atf cooler? san nakaka bili hoses/hose line for atf? base sa international forum di daw kasi pwede ang fuel hose or regular hose line kasi mas matapang ang atf, baka mabutas or masira agad ang hose pag hindi atf rated hose na gagamitin.

    My two, 2c worth....

    1. When the vehicle is not moving (brakes applied) with the engine running and the gear shift in any of the forward or reverse gears, ATF is churning inside the torque converter. Although this causes the ATF to warm up, it is not enough to cause any real harm. What it does is hurt your fuel economy because of the additional drag on the engine that is trying to creep forward but can't, because the brakes are applied.

    2. Like motor oil, ATF temp should always be kept within its specified operating temp. Usually, the A/T would already have employed some sort of cooling and/or warming mechanisms. If adding a cooler causes the ATF to not achieve operating temp, suffice to say, the ATF might not reach optimal viscosity and/or efficiency.

Ganyan nga rin isang option ko, a surplus oil cooler frpm a 4d56 or similar (kung sino pinakamura hehe). Hydraulic hose yata ang kelangan similar to power steering hoses

    -----

The vehicle in question is a Terrano JDM TD27T, but am planning to do it in an Innova and MU-X, cheap insurance against transmission problems.

Yes meron sya built in cooler attached sa radiator , but it seems insufficient for my driving in the mountains, and crawling at insane EDSA midday

Reading international forums, there are lots of debates whether to bypass the radiator cooler and just the external cooler - ang rason nila to bypass is the radiator is it will make both the engine and trans much cooler. But most of the posts were in US and Australia where the weather is significntly cooler, baka di kayanin sa atin running on an external cooler alone...

    Thanks!

ok naman mag install additional cooler para sa atf...

    trans>OEM radiator cooler> aux cooler>trans

just be sure to place it sa area na hindi tatamaan nang road debris.
at maayos mga fittings, lakas ng pressure nang ATF, yung 1 liter bottle will be filled in less than 5 sec.

no need for the fan... with two coolers hindi na yan lalapit sa 100 degrees.

basta regular driving ang no towing...

if you are planning on towing or loading a vehicle, just increase the ATF oil change to 20,000 kms or 1 year.

^ thanks sa suggestion. Baka magpa fabricate na lang ako ng new hoses sa hydraulic shop para matibay at walang leaks

    -------

Masikip ang grille ko so ang pwede ko lang mailagay is either the condenser(with aux fans) or the ATF cooler

Slight OT pero am due na kasi for AC service, may mga nababasa ako na mas OK i-relocate ang AC condenser sa ilalim, then dun ko na lang ilagay ang ATF cooler infront of the radiator... Whatcha think?
