Photo: The removal of the freeway/skyway in Boston.

They turned it into a park boulevard with bike lanes and busways, and more spaces for people to walk.

The result was a 62% reduction in vehicle hours of travel on I-93, the airport tunnels, and the connection from Storrow Drive, from an average 38,200 hours per day before construction (1994–1995) to 14,800 hours per day in 2004–2005, after the project was largely complete. The savings for travelers was estimated at $166 million annually in the same 2004–2005 time frame. Travel times on the Central Artery northbound during the afternoon peak hour were reduced 85.6%.

For more context: The Big Dig project of Boston is a respond to a poor urban design of their metropolis. It cost billions and took forever to finish.

If we allow an inefficient design such as PAREX to solve our traffic issues in the metro then we will eventually become a pre-big dig boston. Are we capable to conduct a mega project such as big dig? Nope.

If we will compare it to PAREX, the big dig is a comprehensive traffic management design that includes the utilization of public transportation, biking and walkable paths, unlike PAREX which focuses on the use of private transportation.

Comparing the population of Boston (5M) and Metro Manila (14M), the PAREX will be a highway meant for the 1% and not for the general public.

    Again, #NoToPAREX.

We cannot compare other cities to Metro Manila.

Pinoy tayo, nakaka-hiya maglakad. From the major road, we need a tricycle for the last mile commute.

PAREX will link the East to S. Stage 3. as of now, I can only think of 4 major roads connecting the East to the Metro. yung isa is connected to Laguna the other is connected sa Batasan... That's 2 roads left and if my memory serves me right. Yung road na lalabas ng Ortigas has only 4 lanes.

IMO, I would prefer a Ro-Ro from the East until Manila bay. Load mo car mo kung kailangan mo ng car sa dulo. Or a tunnel na lang.

Back to being Pinoy. Imagine your UV Express or a colorum car pool using Parex.

Naiisip natin yung MRT/Train/Ferry. Pero just ask your colleagues who are required to report to the office... Majority use a colorum car pool to work.

My colleagues from Bulacan/Pampanga travel to Makati everyday using a car they found in Facebook. Can you imagine kung walang Stage 3? Now imagine how Parex will change the lives of our carless colleagues form the East.

    it's not really difficult.
all one needs are a good plan and a good constructor who would rather work his shovel and not drag it behind him, and lots of money to buy out the rights of way.

but only those positively affected by it, will appreciate it.

    armchair critics...
    heh heh.

if it will decongest the roadways for the 99%,
    i'm still for it.

but it will take a lot of creativity, to retain the charm of the river.

I'm not affected by any of the new highways. I only need to cross a bridge to reach my office (and yes, nag drive pa din ako)

Pero talking to my colleagues in the office, the old Skyway and Stage 3 made their lives more convenient.

Those skyways are laman-tiyan sa may kotse lang.

    Bakit kayo mahihiya maglakad?

sa ibang bansa gumagawa ng walkable cities or reclaiming roads for pedestrians

the developed world built cities for cars, matured, and will transition away from cars

3rd world pinas di pa tapos sa romance stage with cars

papunta palang tayo pabalik na sila

pag nasa city of manila ako lets say pupunta quiapo & divisoria eh paparada ako sa gitna nyan that is ongpin area. Tapos puro lakad na ako. Hindi ako bugok to use a car going to quiapo tapos lipat divisoria. Abutin ako ilan oras sa byahe at parking.

Yung mga lugar na malilit like city of makati, manila, san juan, paranaque dapat puro walkways yan. Lalo na makati naleche talaga.
