MANILA, Philippines - Senator JV Ejercito on Friday accused the Land Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB) of being behind the traffic problem in Metro Manila.
Ejercito said the LTFRB issued bus franchises indiscriminately for years.
"There was a moratorium years ago on bus franchises on EDSA but new buses were able to ply EDSA even after the ban, how come LTFRB?," he said on Twitter.
He said EDSA's capacity is 1,800 buses but more than 4,000 buses -- not including ones from the provinces -- have a franchise to ply EDSA.
He said the agency's officials dodged his question on how many franchises were issued by the LTFRB after the moratorium was imposed.
Ejercito's father, Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada, is going head-to-head with the LTFRB on the city's ban on buses that have no existing terminals in Manila.
The LTFRB said the city council's move is illegal, while Estrada urged those opposing the ban to take their grievances to court.with a report from Jing Castañeda, ABS-CBN News; ANC
