Summer is officially here! Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. imparts practical tips on proper use and maintenance of car air-conditioning unit to beat the summer heat. The air-conditioning unit is an indispensable item in today’s car especially in a tropical country such as ours.

In new cars, problems hardly ever occur but after a length of time, depending on the working conditions, its efficiency naturally diminishes. So, it is advisable that car owners know how to properly use and maintain the car’s air-con system in order to obtain the longest possible service.

    Here are the following suggestions:

1 Check the position of the compressor control switch (A/C knob) if it is in the ‘open’ or ‘shut off’ position. One should shut if off before starting the engine. This will avoid unnecessary drag caused by the compressor while cranking the engine.

2 Once the engine runs on, switch the fan on first. Blow the air-con’s fan at the highest speed for about a minute in order to clear away the hot air trapped in the air-con’s ducts. Then, depress the A/C knob to turn the compressor on at coolest temperature. The next step is to adjust the fan speed and temperature control switch to the level most comfortable to you.

3 Switch off the compressor before cutting off the engine. Keep the fan on at highest speed so that it blows away all humidity trapped inside the evaporator or ‘air-box.’ This will help eliminate the smell of stale air when you subsequently turn on air-con again, and at the same time, to lengthen the service of the evaporator. The process only takes about 2-3 minutes.

pauwi naman lagpas lang sa area na iyon, tung off the thermostant, then pag medyo uminit na, turn off the fan then open the windows.

pag nabilad si vanzy, open all windows, if possible the doors also, after starting, turn on the fan at the highest speed, pag di na ganoon kainit ang buga, tun on the thermostant at the highest (lowest temp) setting. Mag may konting lamig na, byahe na, then close all windows.

Thanks for posting this formalized tip. Seems like this was the post that was being referred to way back when we were discussing the sour smell in the Avanza Aircon thread...

... (No offense, sir) but I'll have to disagree with setting the thermostat at the coolest temperature. IMHO, there's no need to set it to a cooler temperature if it will just go back up to the final setting. Parang nag-oversteering kumbaga, 'no? Ma-a-accelerate lang needlessly ang wear dun sa thermostat dial because of repeated back-and-forth setting -- from off position to MAX, then back to final setting.

Peace po... Just wanna share the idea... I hope you don't mind...

I think what Puroy meant to say was press the A/C knob or switch and not the thermostat, the problem is, Avanza does'nt have A/C knob or A/C switch just like other cars. This is my complaint with toyota why did they remove this switch it is standard with most cars and in fact it is included in the owner's manual, so parang tinipid na naman tayo.

If we follow the procedure of puroy's tip our thermostat knob may wear prematurely just like woohoo said. I was looking for this switch since I bought the car but toyota does'nt have it, I even asked marfin to look for this part but he too cannot find it in Indonesia. This is not a simple switch illuminated sya when you turn on the park/head lights and it has an LED or peanut bulb that turns on when compressor is engaged.

I'm looking for a similar switch that fits exactly with the blank slot provided for this purpose(see manual), but I still cannot find one. I wish someone would find it, calling DIY masters...

BTW, I also use this A/C switch if I need power especially when I need to accelerate or when acsending.

    boknoytm....

Backtrack tayo ng konti.....don't miss the important point I said in my earlier post..."....mabibili ko sa labas at a lower cost, I can choose the quality/material and more importantly it will NOT void any warranty..."

--> voiding the warranty - dun sa tint, seatcover and matting if you buy it outside walang mavo-void na warranty unlike if you have any electrical equipment installed outside the casa.

Generally, items sold sa casa ay mas mahal kesa sa labas at hindi pa pwedeng tawaran (wala pa akong nakitang item sa kasa na mas mura kesa sa labas!)....again the question is yung savings ba na matitipid mo if you buy an electrical equipment outside the casa (including installation) is worth voiding the warranty???

--> re the tint backread ka para malaman mo yung mga points na raised by other tsikoteers re. the price, quality and workmanship nung galing sa casa vs the one available sa labas.

--> re matting naku punta ka sa SM meron don 1K to 1.5K rubberized na tapos may rubber na pataas sa gilid para hindi mag spill sa side yung water.....or better yet go to Banawe at car shops....

--> re the seatcover ask sa casa how much ba yung seatcover that comes with your vanzie...may mga nakapagpapalit na sa atin ng seatcover na leather na parang 3K to 6K ata depende sa material na ginamit...

    anyway,
    a) go to the accessories dept. and check out the prices nung mga items na you are willing to forego,
    b) add up the prices
    c) tapos tingnan mo din kung magkano yung ipapalit mong item/s ~ then humiling ka ng item na mas importante sa iyo, at least of equal value or more, kapalit dun sa ibang freebies.

    Bottomline ....
    > kung hindi importante sa iyo ang warranty makakamura ka ng di hamak sa labas....
    > wag mo lang i-limit sa backup sensor yung ipapalit mo dun sa item na you are willing to forego...example lang po iyon....saka depende sa negotiation mo yan with your SA.

hope i did not confuse you lalo!

The sensor is more expensive than seatcover, tint, and floormat if you buy it in casa but if you buy it in banawe it's cheaper but it will void your warranty (electrical only). Yung back-up sensor ko casa ko pinakabit 4,300 ang kuha ko walang distance indicator, yung kay Jane may distance indicator so mas mahal. Yung seat cover and floormat na libre sa casa very cheap lang lalo na seat cover parang tela lang.

Thanks Shadow ....yung kinabit nga pala sa akin na backup sensor it will tell you kung gaano kalayo ung obstruction (separate reading for left and right sensor). afaik about 7K yung price nya noon.

....the last time I checked meron na sa casa na backup sensor with cam pero yun lang walang night vision (dependent siya sa ilaw sa likod) at sun protect na features kaya hindi muna ako nagpa-upgrade

Yes, the tip did mention the switch, but it also mentioned "COOLEST TEMPERATURE" so you'll still have to turn the thermostat dial up to the MAX position, i.e., if you follow everything the tip says.

    Ni-highlight ko lang. hehe.

Here's an idea... but it may (will?) void your electrical warranty. But I'm going to try doing it anyway:

Since almost 100% of our rides have TINTs on the back door's window over the DEFOGGER which has its OWN SWITCH near the driver's side door (yes, yes, you see where I'm going now, don't you? ) and turning it on WILL SURELY DAMAGE the TINT and/or the DEFOGGER itself...

Why not do what other people do and just turn the defogger circuit into a more powerful (more nga kaya) radio antenna? Then use the defogger switch as your A/C switch!!! WOOHOO!!!! I can't wait to try this! Hehehehe...

Sige nga, post mo sa sub-forum natin DIY of A/C switch. Make a documentary with pics ha. I will surely do that. I'm no longer concern with warranty bcoz I'll really put a power window on my car.

Ah, ganun ba? Wala palang defogger sa J... Oh well, at least meron namang slot yan for the switch, just like the power mirror controller, right?

RE:availability of the switch, paging JONN... I'm guessing that it's installed at the defogger switch's slot. Am I right, or am I correct? Hehehehe... At saan mo nabili?

    I reiterate:

Yes, the tip did mention the switch, but it also mentioned "COOLEST TEMPERATURE" so you'll still have to turn the thermostat dial up to the MAX position from the desired (final) position, i.e., if you follow everything the tip says. And that's a no-no, IMHO.

    Peace, bro...
