TAB BALDWIN NILINAW KUNG BAKIT AKALA NIYANG HINDI NA KAILANGAN NG AEP
"Nobody ever advised me that I should not have an AEP card. I was only advised that a permanent residency card would satisfy my employment requirements."
ATENEO COACH GRANT DEARNS LEAVES THE PHILIPPINES JUST 2 DAYS AFTER TRAGIC TEAM DROWNINGS
Grant Dearns departed the Philippines on June 10, 2026—two days after the tragic drowning deaths of Ateneo de Manila University basketball players Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili during a pre-season training camp in Dipaculao, Aurora.
Here’s what is currently known:
• The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) has recommended that the Department of Justice (DOJ) file charges under the Anti-Hazing Act against former head coach Tab Baldwin, Grant Dearns, and nine other members of the coaching and support staff. Investigators allege the camp involved extreme physical training and hazardous sea-based activities.
• When Dearns left the Philippines, immigration authorities confirmed no Hold Departure Order (HDO) or Immigration Lookout Bulletin Order (ILBO) had been issued against him. His departure was therefore not prohibited under Philippine law.
• Dearns has not publicly addressed the drowning deaths or the recommended criminal charges. During a brief interview on a New Zealand sports podcast, he only confirmed that he had returned home and planned to watch his son, Warner Dearns, compete in the Super Rugby Grand Final.
• Investigators have stated that Dearns was not a full-time Ateneo employee. Instead, he was reportedly brought in by Tab Baldwin as an external strength and conditioning consultant for the June 2026 training camp.
• The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) is also examining the employment arrangements and work authorization of foreign coaching personnel connected to the Ateneo basketball program.
• Following the tragedy, Tab Baldwin resigned as head coach, while the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) issued Ateneo a show-cause order over its handling and reporting of the unsanctioned out-of-town training activity.
The DOJ will ultimately determine whether criminal charges will be filed based on the evidence submitted by investigators.
