Game 2 Talk N Text 96 vs.Brgy. Ginebra 108

YAP NEW STATS PACESETTER IN MVP DERBY
3 Giants in top 5
Thursday, 01 June 2006
Talk about giant leap, and here’s what Purefoods Chunkee Giant James Yap can share.
A season after being beaten in the Rookie of the Year race, Yap is galloping back, lo and behold, as top candidate for the season’s Most Valuable Player plum.
The Escalante, Negros Occidental pride has surged ahead in the season’s MVP derby after his sterling efforts to lead Purefoods Chunkee to the top seeding in the Gran Matador Brandy PBA Philippine Cup playoffs.
Yap, a 6-foot-3 shooting guard out of the University of the East, jumped from No. 3 after the Fiesta Cup to No. 1 at the end of the Philippine Cup classification round with a total of 1433 statistical points (SPs) in 44 games.
Teammate Kerby Raymundo slid from No. 1 to second with 1399 SPs as he missed their last two games due to injury.
Red Bull’s Enrico Villanueva, the Fiesta Conference’s Best Player, dropped one rung down to third with 1369 SPs with his team settling for third place in the Philippine Cup classification round.
Ginebra’s Mark Caguioa stayed at No. 4 with 1214 SPs while another Purefoods Chunkee Giant Marc Pingris leapfrogged from No. 14 to No. 5 with 1197 SPs.
Under league rules, the top five in the stats race dispute the coveted MVP plum in a balloting among fellow players, the media and the MVP four-man committee.
Breathing down Pingris’ neck are Renren Ritualo with 1179, Lordy Tugade with 1175, Roger Yap with 1173, Jayjay Helterbrand with 1157 and Asi Taulava with
1111.
Meanwhile, the fight for the Rookie of the Year honors has become a toss-up between Larry Fonacier and Nino Canaleta with the Air21 freshman making a big charge in the Philippine Cup.
But aside from enjoying the lead in the stats race, being part of the Fiesta Conference champion team may well become a big plus factor for Fonacier.
The Philippine Cup Best Player plum, on the other hand, is being hotly contested by Yap, Pingris, Alaska Aces veteran Nic Belasco and San Miguel stars Danny Seigle, Dorian Pena and Danny Ildefonso.
Seigle paces the field with 1125 followed by Pena (1065) Yap (1059), Belasco (1040), Ildefonso (1007) and Pingris (1001). (NC)
