PBA Coaches Slam Trade Heavily Favoring Giñebra
FOR PBA coaches Tim Cone of Alaska, Yeng Guiao of Red Bull, Alfrancis Chua of Sta. Lucia and Leo Austria of Welcoat, the trade that landed blue-chip players like Raffi Reavis, Billy Mamaril and rights on Rudy Hatfield to Ginebra was “an overkill.”
“That was definitely overkill,” Cone told People’s Tonight in a telephone interview. “Even if Ginebra doesn’t have Romel Adducul, who is injured at the moment, having Eric Menk, Mamaril, Reavis, Andy Seigle, Mike Holper, Mark Caguioa, Jayjay Helterbrand and Rodney Santos playing on one team will install fear on every team.”
“They took away the balance in the PBA,” said Guiao. “Yun nga ang dahilan kung bakit umangat ang rating ng PBA ulit it’s because of the balance among the teams, not Ginebra alone. Now, it seems that Ginebra will once again get the upperhand as far as manpower is concerned.”
Chua agreed on Guiao as far as maintaining the balance among the participants.
“Akala ko ba gusto ng PBA balance ang mga teams?,” said Chua. “Balance ba ‘yan? Kahit hindi marunong mag-basketball matatawa eh.”
Austria, who will handle newcomer Welcoat beginning October, has different approach.
“Having together these superstars in one team, paano mo pagkakasiyahin ‘yung budget ng isang team sa kanila?,” said Austria.
The four coaches gave their views in the light of the trade that took place Saturday wherein Ginebra acquired Reavis, Mamaril and the rights on Hatfield.
Coca-Cola, whose franchise is reportedly set to be sold, took in role players Ryan Bernardo, Manny Ramos, Kalani Ferreria plus one future first round pick and two second round picks.
The Express, on the other hand, went up having Aries Dimaunahan and Ervin Sotto, who will be reunited with former St. Francis of Assisi Doves teammates Yancy and Ranidel de Ocampo.
Former PBA chairman Buddy Encarnado of Sta. Lucia was also furious when he learned about the trade. He said SMC used Air 21 as a conduit, to go around league rules that disallow direct trading between sister teams.
Encarnado said that the PBA rules were “bastardized,” and blamed Air21 for being a party to the trades that helped strengthen Ginebra and weaken Coke. But PBA commissioner Noli Eala, who just returned from a planning session with key members of his staff as well as some of the league’s partners including ABC 5, acted on the comments.
“We’re holding in abeyance approval of the trades until such time that I have completely studied whether any of the rules have been violated,” said Eala, who also indicated he needed time to fully study the implications of the trades, which he conceded was done by the teams in their own best interests.
Meanwhile, Alaska Milk has renewed the contracts of ace guard Mike Cortez and center Sonny Thoss. Both players were extended for three years.
The 5-9 guard from La Salle and the 6-7 center are set to get the maximum pay of P350,000 a month.
