FOR PBA coaches Tim Cone of Alaska, Yeng Guiao of Red Bull, Alfrancis Chua of Sta. Lucia and Leo Austria of Welcoat, the trade that landed blue-chip players like Raffi Reavis, Billy Mamaril and rights on Rudy Hatfield to Ginebra was “an overkill.”

“That was definitely overkill,” Cone told People’s Tonight in a telephone interview. “Even if Ginebra doesn’t have Romel Adducul, who is injured at the moment, having Eric Menk, Mamaril, Reavis, Andy Seigle, Mike Holper, Mark Caguioa, Jayjay Helterbrand and Rodney Santos playing on one team will install fear on every team.”

“They took away the balance in the PBA,” said Guiao. “Yun nga ang dahilan kung bakit umangat ang rating ng PBA ulit it’s because of the balance among the teams, not Ginebra alone. Now, it seems that Ginebra will once again get the upperhand as far as manpower is concerned.”

Chua agreed on Guiao as far as maintaining the balance among the participants.

“Akala ko ba gusto ng PBA balance ang mga teams?,” said Chua. “Balance ba ‘yan? Kahit hindi marunong mag-basketball matatawa eh.”

Austria, who will handle newcomer Welcoat beginning October, has different approach.

“Having together these superstars in one team, paano mo pagkakasiyahin ‘yung budget ng isang team sa kanila?,” said Austria.

The four coaches gave their views in the light of the trade that took place Saturday wherein Ginebra acquired Reavis, Mamaril and the rights on Hatfield.

Coca-Cola, whose franchise is reportedly set to be sold, took in role players Ryan Bernardo, Manny Ramos, Kalani Ferreria plus one future first round pick and two second round picks.

The Express, on the other hand, went up having Aries Dimaunahan and Ervin Sotto, who will be reunited with former St. Francis of Assisi Doves teammates Yancy and Ranidel de Ocampo.

Former PBA chairman Buddy Encarnado of Sta. Lucia was also furious when he learned about the trade. He said SMC used Air 21 as a conduit, to go around league rules that disallow direct trading between sister teams.

Encarnado said that the PBA rules were “bastardized,” and blamed Air21 for being a party to the trades that helped strengthen Ginebra and weaken Coke. But PBA commissioner Noli Eala, who just returned from a planning session with key members of his staff as well as some of the league’s partners including ABC 5, acted on the comments.

“We’re holding in abeyance approval of the trades until such time that I have completely studied whether any of the rules have been violated,” said Eala, who also indicated he needed time to fully study the implications of the trades, which he conceded was done by the teams in their own best interests.

Meanwhile, Alaska Milk has renewed the contracts of ace guard Mike Cortez and center Sonny Thoss. Both players were extended for three years.

The 5-9 guard from La Salle and the 6-7 center are set to get the maximum pay of P350,000 a month.

Yeng's two cents on dubious 7-player trade by : Zean Macamay

EVEN if the Philippine Basketball Association clears Ginebra, Coca-Cola and Air21 of any wrongdoing from the dubious three-team, seven-player trade, the perception will remain that the league is going in the opposite direction.

“They (Ginebra, Coca-Cola and Air21) may have followed the rules regarding trades, but the spirit was not,” said Red Bull coach Yeng Guiao. “This is not the path the league should trek. It’s going in a different direction.”

Almost a week after the three ball clubs consummated a transaction that was obviously beneficial to the country’s most popular team, the league has yet to conduct a formal investigation on the matter and decide that it was done without malice.

The PBA Board will have an informal get-together early today with new chairman Ricky Vargas of Talk ‘N Text as host, but whether the delicate issue of the trade will be tackled is not known since no agenda has been set.

Teams not controlled by San Miguel Corp. raised a howl of protest over the weekend after Billy Mamaril and Raffy Reavies were shipped out to Ginebra from Coca-Cola with Air21 acting as the middleman.

The Gin Kings also seized the rights to Rudy Hatfield, again from Coca-Cola. In return, they traded Aries Dimaunahan and Ervin Sotto to the Express, and Manny Ramos and Kalani Ferreira to the Tigers.

Air21 unloaded Ryan Bernardo plus future draft picks.

The hot issue of Air21 conniving with SMC was even fanned yesterday when reports reached Buddy Encarnado, Sta. Lucia’s board representative, that the Express and the Beermen are intent on making another deal on draft day, Aug. 20.

Air21 owns the second pick, and is expected to choose LA Tenorio. The former Ateneo ace guard is reportedly to be traded to San Miguel since he is the type the Beermen badly need as an heir apparent to the aging Olsen Racela.

The Express also have the fourth pick while the Beermen the third and fifth choices.

Such dealings, Encarnado said, is unacceptable.

“Huwag naman sana matuloy (Air21-SMB trade),” said Encarnado. “Masyado ng blatant. The PBA is composed of 10 teams and not everybody is not as big as they (SMC-controlled teams) are.”

Sta. Lucia was one of the teams aside from Red Bull and Alaska that protested last week’s trade, saying that the balance among the teams the league has been protecting through the years has now been tilted.

The Express, for their part, see no reason why the trade should draw objections. As far as they are concerned, they only wanted to acquire the players they need • Dimaunahan and Sotto.

Instead, Air21 team manager Lito Alvarez said, Sta. Lucia and the rest should now look into whether the Gin Kings will comply with the league’s salary cap.

The Gin Kings have three legitimate superstars in Eric Menk, Mark Caguioa and Jay-Jay Helterbrand, and recently signed big man Andy Seigle, another player believed to be receiving the maximum pay of P350,000 montly.

The addition of Mamaril and Reavies will definitely shake the Gin Kings’ salary cap.

Meanwhile, Coca-Cola formally released a statement yesterday disputing reports that it is disbanding.

Bobby Huang, president of Coca-Cola Bottlers Philippines Inc.
(CCBPI) and PBA Governor for the Coca-Cola Tigers, said that the team is committed to stay in the league and has now intentions of breaking up.
