Express rip Dragons; Bulls smother Kings

Air21, despite playing with an injury-hit roster, started the 2007-08 Smart PBA Fiesta Conference on a high note, whipping Welcoat, 105-96, at the Araneta Coliseum last night.

The Express bucked the absence of JC Intal, Homer Se, Gabby Espinas and Ervin Sotto as import Steven Thomas made an impact early and the rest put up a solid defensive game to deal the Dragons their 12th straight defeat in the season.

Seven-foot import Adam Parada had a grand debut with Red Bull, making 28 points and 21 rebounds to lead the team to an 89-83 win over Barangay Ginebra in the second game.

Red Bull coach Yeng Guiao didn’t field in Junthy Valenzuela, hinting at his forthcoming transfer to Ginebra in exchange for Sunday Salvacion.

“I chose not to use Junthy because I don’t want to put him in a difficult situation ,” said Guiao.


Thomas outplayed Jason Keep with Ranidel de Ocampo and Arwind Santos coming through with big games for Air21, which made it 3-0 against Welcoat dating back to the Philippine Cup where it finished seventh.

“We gave up 106 points per game last conference and I guess 96 is a big improvement,” said Air21 coach Bo Perasol, believing they did a good defensive effort against the Dragons and their two imports in Keep and Corey Santee.

Thomas, De Ocampo and Santos each scored at least 23 points for Air21, overshadowing the performances of Keep and Santee.

Keep, a 6-foot-10 center who played for San Diego and Oklahoma State in college basketball, huffed and puffed in piling up 12 points and 15 rebounds, appearing to be an import not worth keeping.

Thomas, a 6-foot-8 Middle Tennessee State product, did a lot better, pacing himself well to pour in 10 of his 23 in the payoff period.

“It’s the best game he’s shown so far counting his performances in our tune-up games. I think he’s not yet in shape and he has a lot more to give,” said Perasol of Thomas who also logged 15 rebounds and one shot block in 39 minutes of action.

Perasol also hopes his team will get better as the conference progresses.

“As of now, we’re playing wounded. We played minus four players and with Gary David not 100 percent healthy,” said Perasol.

The Express, however, hardly missed the services of their injured players as they came out strong, leading by as many as 20 points in dominating the Dragons in their first game under new head coach Caloy Garcia.

Air21 converted 53.8 percent of their field-goal shots as it erected a 52-34 lead at the turn.

The two teams actually figured in a nip-and-tuck battle early on before the Express came through with a 16-to-nothing run to open a 17-point spread at 47-30.

The Dragons ended their spell as the comebacking Hercules Tangkay rifled in a trey after Santos fumbled a breakaway Air21 play.

yep, undersize yung si Turner for a power player. Kitang kita mo yung height difference nila ni Parada pag nagtabi. Gin Kings should get a do-it all 6'9 player. Kung walang height limit, why not get a 7 footer banger and shot blocker. Kaso barya barya lang ang sahod nila dito compared if they will be an import in Europe.

Talo ang AA sa SLR. Maganda naman pinakita ni LA at Fonacier pero mahina masyado import ng AA kumpara sa SLR.

Talo na naman ang MBM sa PF. Nag double double si Rico at nag score ng 50+ points yung import. Double OT siya pero andaming tirang tres nung PF import na sablay eh. OK din naman pinakita ni Pingris, kaso si Cortez sunod-sunod ang error sa end game.
