Reposting this guide, since more people are asking again….
Should we be concerned that the
positivity rate is going up?
Unfortunately, this number is no longer very reliable -
fewer people are being tested with RTPCR, which affects the percentages. In addition,
the ones who test are more likely to be positive (admitted to hospital, needed for workplace, etc), which also impacts the rate.
At best, the value is in the trends being seen, and the higher rate correlates with what we observe in our networks - more of the people we personally know are getting COVID.
Together with keeping an eye on the positivity rate, we should also learn to monitor the HCUR or healthcare utilization rate. For as long as there are facilities available to take care of people who need to be admitted, the situation can be managed.
How should we respond? People have said before that they hoped for “COVID to become endemic” - this is a preview of what that looks like! And in the same way that we take precautions when we hear that a typhoon signal is raised, the actions we need to take - updating vaccinations, staying home when sick, testing to verify symptoms, wearing masks if we are close contacts and in enclosed crowded settings, and choosing well ventilated places - are all within our reach, and can help control the numbers.
Let’s think about the vulnerables - babies who can’t be vaccinated yet, our seniors, and those with other illnesses. They need us to be their wall of protection.
Stay safe everyone!
