MiniDV captures at 720x480. If you intend to do a lot of video, stick with a dedicated camcorder, be it MiniDV or one of those new ones with flash memory storage. The built-in video of digital cameras are best for short clips.
MiniDV with my 4-yr old JVC DVL510U:
This was from one of the very first avi-capable digital camera (not sure what it was). It's quite old (older than above) with a native res of 320x240 (the video is expanded under Windows Media Center). Newer ones have higher res of 640x480 or better:
Compare both to 8mm from 1995:
The digital camera video should be quite good. But, they are prone to having jerky frame rates at higher resolutions.
