I got creamed by the I-16 as well until I kept my altitude above 20,000 ft or 7000 m where the performance of the I-16 dropped off. Not sure if it's a pilot liability or the aircraft since it also has a supercharger but is open cockpit.
Anyway, the hard part is reaching high altitude. If you can survive long enough to get up high, then you have a chance.
The only other option is to hit the I-16 while it's targeting someone else.

Yup. If you keep your altitude above 7000 m, you stand a chance. In this case, the I-16 still managed to hit my plane. But, when I kept my aircraft above 7000 m, the AI seemed to back off a bit.
But, drop your altitude to 6000 m and he's on you just like that. Here, I got off a deflection shot which apparently damaged his engine because he slowed down and quit making tight turns. I kept with him while avoiding getting lured below 7000 m.
Oh, I was in an Me-109F which would be accurate for Operation Barbarossa in 1941.
In a way, it's still similar to dogfighting a Japanese Zero which became less maneuverable above 20,000 ft.
In this one dogfight a few weeks ago, I got a Zero on a dive. But with three other Zeros at or above my altitude, I'm not sticking around. Time to tuck tail and get out of Dodge! They can get on my tail and fire before I even realize what's going on. I figured I better retreat while my aircraft still had some energy left. My altitude wasn't really that high. And yes, I too was hugging the sea by the time this was over.

December 11th, 2009 11:48 AM #313Sounds good. I'll give another whirl.
So, do I lurk at 7000m and just wait for enemy to go up? If not, how do you bait them?

He He. It's been a long time since I flew in the campaign. So I'm not sure about that part.
I used the Quick Mission to stage the 1v1 with the I-16 starting out first at 5000 meters and another at 7000 meters.
My observation was after the head-on pass and initial break, I was on the defensive in both flight levels for much of the time. At 5000 meters, the I-16 was all over me. I just barely made it above 7000 m. I was constantly weaving with small dips and climb. But, I kept to the overall goal of climbing to higher altitude. That took a looong time.
In my own defense, I was also flying with only a Logitech joystick which has "rudder" control through the joystick stem. If I had rudder pedals like my broken CH, I could perform "tail skids" which could probably throw off the superhuman aim of the I-16.
When the 1v1 started out at 7000 m, I was chagrined when the I-16 once more latched on to my tail and put some holes in my aircraft.
One difference though. Although I was still on the defensive, I noticed the I-16 wasn't quite as quick and it was shooting at me from lower down. I fought the urge to build up more speed by diving down and instead concentrated on the same goal of ultimately going to a higher flight level, weaving and dipping once in a while to minimize energy loss. Once I reached 7450 meters, I stayed there. The I-16 eventually climbed up to my flight level where I was eventually able to get an angle for a deflection shot. I mean it still wasn't easy. That I-16 could still easily shoot me down if I made a wrong move.
When I had the 1v1 start at 7500 meters, The I-16 didn't even try to shoot during the head-on at the break. It tried to latch to my tail but immediately fell behind.

Anyway, the I-16 with superhuman pilot isn't new. I've seen the same with P-39's in 1942: Pacific Air War (Microprose 1994). There's nothing more frustrating than to see a P-39 Airacobra outclimbing and outmaneuvering a Zero then make deadly zoom and boom attacks.
That's what the I-16 in IL-2 reminds me of.
Also, I noticed Forgotten Battles is crash-happy without those patches.Last edited by Jun aka Pekto; December 11th, 2009 at 03:49 PM.

A good reference for the I-16 which really isn't that big a pushover:

Seems like the only advantage an Me-109 has is top speed at level flight. The credo "Speed is Life" holds very true.Last edited by Jun aka Pekto; December 11th, 2009 at 04:03 PM.

December 11th, 2009 04:50 PM #317I'm also using a Logitech stick with a twist rudder (Strike Force 3D).
I've yet to use rudder pedals so I don't know what I'm missing :D.
Anyway, have you seen the Logitech G940? (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/ga.../5855&cl=sg,en)

They need to have a standalone set of rudder pedals. Rudder pedals allow you to do things with aircraft in the same way a joystick made it easier to circle-strafe your opponents in GLQuake and Quake 2.
In flight/combat sims, rudder pedals allowed you to tail-skid. The closest analogy is think of it as horizontal thrust-vectoring. You can actually skid from side to side. I'm not sure if it'll work with an I-16 at my tail. But, it might work with a head-on pass.Last edited by Jun aka Pekto; December 11th, 2009 at 11:07 PM.

Not too many choices for standalone rudder pedals:
Saitek:
CH:
Both have a newegg.com price of $115. *SIGH* I wish I didn't break my CH.....

Sneaking up on an enemy and grabbing them is one of my less-used tactics in Crysis. I'm a little hesitant sometimes to use it because the opponents are North Koreans. I had a great time in South Korea and the enemy in Crysis hit a little too close to home even though they're from the northern side of the DMZ.
Oh well.I use it while cloaked when I want to be a Predator (as in Predator the movie) wannabe.
