I got turned off by Crysis when I heard how much of a resource hog it is. But now playing the demo with a rig that can handle it...... I like it. Crytek should've put Jack in it and called it Far Cry 2. Crysis should've been the one set in Africa.
POK POK POK POKAAAK!

Sure enough. A bunch of Windows 7 updates/patches fixed the install issue on many games.
I downloaded the ArmA 2 demo again. But, there's a lot of nonstandard keyboard assignments. Obviously, this isn't Crysis or Far Cry. Ugh. I have to memorize the keys first......
But, it runs pretty well on my pc at 1440x900 with AA and AF maxxed out and everything else set to High (Highest/Very High is the top setting).

I've been testing out games running in virtualized OSes.
This one is IL-2 Sturmovik running in XP Home via VirtualBox under Windows 7 64-bit host.
The 3d support is experimental and OpenGL games are the only ones that worked with any consistency. The framerates on this one..... I'm impressed. This is better than my Toshiba laptop running IL-2 natively. Unlike Quake 2*, this one is actually playable.
*The timedemos in Quake II were waaaaay too fast at nearly 300 fps<---that's under virtualized XP Home. Sheesh.
For Linux users..... They already have WINE and its developments. But soon, VirtualBox with 3d support will be another option.Last edited by Jun aka Pekto; November 19th, 2009 at 07:17 AM.

Testing out the RTS World In Conflict here with its benchmarking tool. As I've said before, I'm about a couple of years behind in gaming. I'm just finding out some games now have framerate caps which limit the maximum framerates to a playable 30fps, leaving more cpu/gpu power to spare and keep the minimum framerates as close to the maximum as possible. With Crysis, it's always on which is why it seemed playable even with framerates in the mid-20's.
With World of Conflict, the framerate cap can be turned off which can lead to massive slowdowns with maximum activity onscreen.

I realize the current trend for most games is to emulate the real world as much as possible. But, real-world colors are pretty drab. Look no further than Crysis. The original Far Cry (with a similar setting) for the pc is lush and vibrant in comparison....... I actually prefer the colors of the older game.

I'm disappointed at ArmA 2. I thought Crysis was a hog. But at least if a pc was beefy enough to run Crysis, the game itself is quite polished with excellent single-player and gorgeous visuals to boot.
ArmA 2 is a very good simulation of combat especially with the multiplayer aspect. But, it's even more of a hog than Crysis with not as much eye candy to show for it. Crysis came out as simply overloaded with eye candy while ArmA 2 feels unoptimized.
Crysis didn't make game of the year when it came out because it was such a hog. But once the steep requirements to run it fluidly (and most graphics settings intact) was satisfied, I'd say it could've been GOTY material back in 2007.
