Batanes, Tawi-Tawi now connected to wireless broadband Internet
Smart Communications, Inc. announced the availability of its Smart WiFi service in Basco, Batanes and Bonggao, Tawi-Tawi.
Residents of the capital towns of the country’s farthest provinces can now enjoy high speed Internet broadband connection without the need for physical cable or fixed telephone line as Smart Communications, Inc. announced the availability of its Smart WiFi service in Basco, Batanes and Bonggao, Tawi-Tawi.
Smart WiFi offers fixed wireless broadband connection that is up to twice the speed of dial-up connection, making surfing the Web and chatting online faster and easier. The service was soft-launched in selected provincial areas nationwide.
“The launch of Smart’s fixed wireless broadband services in the remotest capital towns of the country is a symbolic milestone for us. We hope that this new service will provide a welcome boost for Internet usage especially in areas of the country that has thus far lagged behind," said Napoleon L. Nazareno, Smart president and CEO.
Basco is the capital town of Batanes, the northernmost province of the Philippines known for its rugged but scenic coastline. It is nearer to Taiwan than to the nearest point in the Philippines.
Bonggao, meanwhile, is the capital town of Tawi-Tawi, located at the country’s southernmost tip in the middle of the Sulu seas.
Although Internet connection via satellite technology is available in both areas through local Internet Service Providers (ISPs), Basco and Bonggao still suffer from inadequate Internet facilities because of their geographical locations and the relatively high subscription cost of satellite connection.
Smart WiFi utilizes existing Smart cellsites in the areas where it has been rolled out. It is made possible by connecting a computer to a Smart WiFi antenna that is installed outdoors with a direct ‘line-of-sight’ to the nearest Smart cellsite with the strongest possible signal association. Unlike dial-up Internet service or fixed broadband, the Smart WiFi service does not require telephone or cable lines.
Rolando G. Peña, Smart head for network services division added, “We hope that with Smart WiFi, we can serve the untapped demand for Internet usage in both urban and rural areas. Wireless technology is ideal because it can be easily deployed and it is not dependent on existing wired infrastructure.”
Smart WiFi is initially available in selected provincial areas nationwide at an introductory monthly subscription rate of P788 (regular price of P988 after 30 September 2005).
To get connected, a subscriber must have a personal computer with the following system specifications: Pentium III processor or higher, 128 MB of RAM or higher, Ethernet/ LAN Card, at least 10GB of hard disk space, and Windows 98, 2000, XP, Linux or Macintosh operating system.
Sales inquiries can be made through Smart Wireless Centers or through *3888 toll-free from a Smart cellphone.
Is anybody here at tsikot already a subscriber of the Smart WiFi? I'm planning to have 1 at home, kaso not so sure if the connection is stable and is it really faster than dial up?
try pldt weroam .. but i think it only works if you have pcmcia card slot .. tried it with my laptop .. ayos naman .. basta may smart signal .. faster than meridian IMO .. defenitely faster than dial up .. check the site .. www.pldtweroam.com ...
^pang business yung weroam. i think P3k is the cheapest for weroam. for mobility yung smart wifi, its only 128kbps. go for meridian(288kbps) na lang if its for home use.
how do you know if you have a smart wifi signal in your area? scan ko kasi with the built-in wifi ng laptop ko walang makuhang signal. or do you need a software from smart for this? sorry po for the stoopid qs, virgin pa wetpaks ko pag dating sa topic na 'to ehehehe!
limited ang range ng wi-fi, hence nasa mga cafe ng malls lang meron.. meron resto sa banawe yong gloria maris, pag 200k ang receipt free ng use ng wifi...
actually the answer is already there in your question. as long as you have a smart signal then definitely you will be having a wifi signal.Originally Posted by yebo
you laptop doesnt have the antenna to sniff a wifi signal. you will be needing an outdoor/indoor antenna to do this. and that antennas will be connected to your laptop via STP cable thru pcmcia slot. then IP configurations must set-up to your LAN settings as well as some configurations to your outdoor antenna.
so bossing hindi pwede yung 802.11b/g wifi lang, dapat talaga may outdoor antenna? meron kasi built-in wifi yung laptop kala ko pwede na yun. gagamit pa din pala ako ng wifi router na may outdoor antenna?
So far so good, 2 mos na ako nakasubscribe. Kung pangbrowse and pangview ng video clips, oks na. value for money. 288kbps burstOriginally Posted by 20vanda01

btw, speed ko range from 240kbps to around 280+kbps... from www.2wire.com
Puede mo gamitin ang built-in wi-fi ng laptop mo provided na nai-scan siya within range ng laptop wi-fi mo... then configure mo lang laptop mo at ayos ka na... BUT and only BUT, you can only connect to the base station wherein youare configured by the smart wi-fi techs...Originally Posted by yebo

Smart rolls out wireless broadband in Cebu
(BusinessWorld, Maritess S. Villamor)
CEBU CITY -- Smart Communications, Inc. has deployed wireless broadband equipment from the Minglanilla town in the south to the city of Danao up north in Cebu province.
This covers a 38-kilometer area to the north and south of Cebu City. Wireless broadband equipment has also been installed in Medellin, around 120 kilometers north of this city.
"As we speak, we are rolling out on a blanket basis wireless broadband installations in Cebu. I think we have covered from Minglanilla up to Danao already. Maybe you don’t know this, but the air you breathe is now broadband," Smart President and Chief Executive Napoleon Nazareno told participants to the Sun*Star economic forum here yesterday.
He said they hoped to significantly deepen internet penetration. Wireless broadband is the most affordable way for both residential and business clients to gain access to reliable, high-speed internet connectivity, he added.
PLDT public affairs head, Ramon R. Isberto, said they were installing WiFi (wireless fidelity) equipment on over 5,000 Smart cell sites nationwide. The service was launched in Cebu in July. Smart has signed a contract to buy Motorola’s Canopy wireless broadband products for the project.
Meanwhile, Mr. Isberto said they were not likely to provide digital mobile television services in the near future.
"There are no handsets. If ever there will be, these will be expensive. Prices of cellphones are already going down. We need to find revenue streams that will target a large part of the market. We believe wireless broadband will be one of these revenue opportunities that have growth potential," he said.
