It was probably his flash drive that's infected in the first place.

Anyway, you can try downloading SDFIX (google for it, you'll find it), you might still get the virus.

Otherwise, try GH's suggestion of reinstalling via recovery disc/s.

Aye. I suspect it's the flash drive as well unless the previous owner had used the Dell netbook and didn't do a fresh re-install of the recovery software.
