had an hp mininote for a week. sold it after.

problem was the screen is to small and the fonts are smaller due to the 1024x768 screen resolution on a small lcd screen. gives me a headache after an hour of use.

2nd was the keyboard, its way too small. cant always press the right shift key without looking at it first. 3rd was the processing speed is too slow. it has the via cpu. not sure how the intel atom performs.

for video playback. dont multi task. it will degrade the performance and will show the video going frame by frame with lines hehehe

and oh yea. with just under and hour and a half of battery time, it sucks big time. even when i minimize the brightness setting.

i think its ok for student use. except when doing some presentation heavy stuffs.

You can try choosing from netbooks with near full sized keyboards. These would be the ones with ten inch LCD screens. Examples would be:

    HP Mini 10" series
    MSi Wind U100 series
Asus EEE PC 1000H or 1000HE models

i have large hands and i can type well enough with my netbook's keyboard. it might not be 100% like my desktop's keyboard but it is not hunt and peck style as when I tried using a very small netbook like the Asus EEE PC 701.

The early Via CPU based HP mini was kinda slow as compared to newer Atom based netbooks.

Video playback, with my previous and current netbooks, both Atom cpu based, playback were very good even with more than one application running. It is possible you were using MS' mediaplayer which is very inefficient. 3rd party video and audio playback software are much better. Also I upgraded my netbook's to their max memory (Acer Aspire One = 1.5gig and MSi Wind U100 = 2gig) which helps in keeping performance high.

As for the battery, you can't really expect much endurance from a 3 cell battery. Getting a six or even nine cell battery gives a more usable battery life to any netbook. My aftermarket nine cell battery can last 7 hours ... probably under six hours if I was watching movies and videos with the screen set at 50% brightness.

I was looking for either a fully black or a fully white unit at the time.

I got a nine cell battery to extend the useful life while on battery. The original six cell battery gets me around 4 to 4.5 hours. The nine cell gets 6.5 to 7.5 hours with typical use.

Software, I have installed ROCKETDOCK aside from the usual antivirus and other productivity applications.

Kindly check the msiwind.net forum for the best place to buy a proper nine cell battery because there have been a number of "fakes" being sold out there. Fakes are those batteries which are over-rated in their capacity. Example, the label reads 7800mAh but in reality, the battery is only 6600mAh.

Note: my 9-cell batt is only 6600mAh which is good enough for my needs and requirements.

Not really and I don't plan to get a rubber keyboard protector because it bothers my typing (I've tried using a Macbook with one). But check the MSi Wind forum (msiwind.net) for info from other users.

I bought my MSi Wind U100+ for P20,995.00 from PC Corner (using a discount deal with TPC members).

    http://www.pccorner.com.ph/controlle...n=mobilecorner
(on the right column, choose UMPC in the chassis-type option and click SEARCH)

The best deals on their website are:
    -Asus EEE PC 1000HE
    -MSi Wind U100+
    -Acer Aspire One (8gig SDD)

But be careful when you choose the Acer because it comes with Linux and requires a bit of tweaking to get it to run Windows XP with minimal lag. The major problem with the Acer is the slow SSD if you plan to upgrade to WinXP.

    VR-Zone Review: Mini Notebook/Netbook Roundup

Overall, the mini notebook PCs showed sufficient power to run your office applications and surf your favorite websites. But among all, we find the MSI U100 Plus offers the best value with good overall performance.

    OTOH,

In T3 Philippines April 2009 issue(?), the Lenovo Ideapad S10 got their top marks.

Well, these contrasting reviews makes it even harder to decide which one to get.

    I bought it online.

    http://www.global-laptop-batteries.c...d-Battery.html

Note: although the battery is listed to be rated at 7800mAh, it is really just 6600mAh. Shipping takes just over two weeks to arrive at your post office.

You can also check netbook user sites like http://netbooks.ph for users who are selling stuff when they upgrade their toys to the next level.

The Lenovo S10 is really a great netbook in design and function BUT the unit usually comes with a 3 cell battery which handicaps is use outside the home or office. Six cell batteries are currently available from the Lenovo store. Biggest downside is the price.

For those buying a MSi Wind u100 series netbook... best to check the unit's features like WiFi and bluetooth because the ones being sold locally are limited to WiFi B/G and no bluetooth while some units being sold abroad would feature WiFi B/G/N and bluetooth and even 3.5G connectivity.

Yeah. My wife bought one last month when were in Manila last month. About the same price. Good deal na rin.

Pinagpilian between Acer Aspire One and MSI Wind.
