For me, the government must be fair to all. They should first start cleaning their ranks before even cracking the whip to end users like us. I'm not against their authority nor their plan to eliminate piracy albeit it needs diligence & prudence on their part. Piracy is in broad form meaning lots of counterfeit items(DVD, VCD, CD, Shirts, bags, etc) roaming our streets. If the government is really hell bent in curbing piracy, why not they go about getting all the pirated non-software stuff from the market first. I think it is prejudicial on their part and I think it is highly unfair. I've been a registered MS user for almost 13 years now and I don't mind seeing Filipinos using pirated MS softwares as long as it is used in private or single-end user.

WAG NA TAYO MAG PA PLASTIC. HALOS LAHAT TAYO AY GUMAMIT NA NG FAKE PRODUCTS OR PIRATED ITEMS ONE WAY OR THE OTHER. WAG NATIN LAITIN AT ISISI LAHAT SA MAMAMAYANG PILIPINO DATAPWAT ISISI NATIN ITO SA ATING INUTILE NA GOBYERNO.

The Government is just doing it to appease the US Government & Mr. Gates in order to repay its "debts". Just think about it. Why only now?

After reading this long thread, most tsikoteers here are actually mad only at those people who use pirated stuffs for business use that hurt their own rival business that use legitimate products. If it's for personal use, then it is to each his own. We can patronize pirated goods and use whatever is left from our meager salaries for more important stuffs and go on with our lives.

The police should arrest those who SELL pirated stuffs. If nobody will sell, nobody can buy.

I agree with you bro 100%. As long as the Government doesn't barge in our private homes, then it will suffice. I agree in the curbing of piracy in our country as it takes away the equitable & free entrepreneurship in our system. However, the Police & the Government should put their efforts together in a more unprejudiced route. You are right bro, "walang addict kung walang pusher." Systema lang iyan!

Ah yes... the ultimate scapegoat... blame the government! Damn if they do, damn if they don't.

The BSA already did this before (with warning letters and all).

Microsoft is a private business out to earn money - not a charity organization. What is wrong with protecting their interests? And if they want cheap licenses for educational institutions and such - they can try to ask from Microsoft itself.

Btw, raids are not only done against users of illegal software but also against the sellers. If you've noticed - some shops are already displaying legitimate / licensed software packages along with the pirated ones.

masagutan na nga yung Software Rental Agreement na iyan....hmmmph...this is their way of tracking internet cafe's with licensed OS...

Ah Yes! The blame the Filipino people and the opposition.

Corruption is an obstacle to progress and the antithesis of good governance. It is a stain on the integrity of a nation. It diminishes its moral fibre. Corruption hinders investment, slows growth, embolden piracy, contributes to unemployment, leads to a reduction in living standards and thus reduces government revenues.

Democracy, good governance and modernity must not be imported or imposed from outside a country.

SAbi nung isang opismate ko, yung net cafe daw na kapitbahay nila na-raid. All they had to do was shell out P8,000+ bucks per pc. They essentially just bought the OS. Tapos ngayon legal na. I assume they were given CDs or serials.

This indeed does support the argument that MS is just trying to reach a quota.

On original/pirated. Hell! Screw us all!

Mamatay na hindi gumamit ng P* software! Tignan ko kung sino maiwan na buhay hehehe :evillaugh

That only goes to show na bulok ang systema ng Gobyerno natin. BSA or even the police, they suck big time. That's why corruption lead us to this. Lagyan lang wala na...escape na! "walang maglalagay kung walang mag papalagay".

    Software Crackdown on Sep. 16
    9/7/2005

The GMA administration vows to put a stop to piracy - not only within the entertainment sector, but also within the business sector. The government supports a recent bid made by a private association set on eliminating software piracy in metropolitan areas.

The Business Software Alliance (BSA) is set to launch a massive crackdown on September 16. Business owners and private individuals are called upon to uninstall all pirated software from their personal computers before September 17.

Outfits large and small have already begun to feel the strain of this wave. While the original target was large businesses, even medium-sized businesses like Internet cafes were taken down by the preliminary inspections.

While protecting IPR is of course a good thing, a demonstration that the government is serious about protecting software developed within the country, one will have to wonder why the procedures are being launched without advocating an alternative, specifically for SMEs like net cafes. There are two viable alternatives to using pirated software:

    1) Purchasing licensed copies, and

    2) Converting to open-source operating systems and applications

Both options are extraordinarily hard to achieve for SMEs. On top of purchasing licensed Microsoft Windows packages, some small businesses also need to buy licensed copies of other widely-used applications, such as the Adobe Creative Suite, which would alone cost over PhP30k.

Does the government not want to encourage open-source alternatives? This move is a great blow to locally established SMEs, even private individuals who provide offshore consultancy and freelance services.

Rumors of a Microsoft “Bintana” - a cheaper localized alternative to Microsoft - have been circulating, but there has been no confirmation from Microsoft regarding its development and eventual release. There have even been highly publicized announcements in major broadsheets about this upcoming release, and local developers view it with some skepticism.

The Philippines is known far and wide as a hotbed of piracy - but in fact, the country already has strong IP protection laws. Atty. JJ Disini, a member of the Philippine Internet Commerce Society (PICS) who was actively involved in the lobbying efforts for the passage of the eCommerce Act (Republic Act No. 8792) gives some insight on the nature of legal IP protection in the Philippines. The linked post specifically challenges the statistics posed by the BSA regarding piracy in the country.

mas effective ang sistema pag ang hahabulin ng mga nang-re-raid eh yung establishment owners

impose a fine upon them pag meron silang tenant na nagbebenta ng pirated software/s etc.

*raikonen, try mo openoffice, pang windows yan, free.
