DOLE to OFWs: Don’t bring pirated CDs abroad
(INQ7.net 09/15/05,Veronica Uy)
Bringing pirated compact discs (CDs) abroad could lead to arrest
BRINGING pirated compact discs (CDs) abroad could lead to arrest, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has warned overseas Filipinos workers (OFWs).
Labor Secretary Patricia Sto. Tomas issued the warning on Wednesday after a male OFW was arrested by police for carrying 32 pieces of fake or pirated CDs upon his arrival last month at the Dammam Airport in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Citing a report from welfare officer Danilo Flores of the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) in Riyadh, Sto. Tomas said the OFW left the country on August 23 to work as secretary for a certain Mustabah Al Haider/Ramjen in Rahimah, Rastanura.
He is now detained at the Dammam Airport Jail, the labor chief said without naming the overseas worker.
“The POLO and the Philippine embassy in Riyadh together with the employer are negotiating with the Saudi authorities for his release,” Sto. Tomas said.
Flores said his office learned about the arrest through another OFW, a certain Ronaldo Pineda, who works as an X-ray technician at the Dammam Airport.
According to Pineda, the arrested OFW signed a document confessing that he had intended to sell the fake CDs in Saudi.
The Saudi police meted out a fine of 16,000 rials as a penalty for the confiscated illegal CDs. His employer, however, could only afford to pay 3,000 rials.
Pineda also said the OFW suffered a mild heart attack while in jail.

Regarding kung ire-raid ng NBI pati PC home users... got this from another site...
After locking the gate eh kinuha ko laptop ko (para orig software) and showed it to them... they checked the sticker and asked kung pwede daw pumasok para ma check kung may other pc daw kami aside from the laptop.
Siguro malaki kinikita nila from Microsoft to make operations like that.
Please take proper care guys... kung totoong they'll confiscate pc's eh that's BULL$#!t!
So, sorry nalang sila. Che!![]()
Mazdamazda, I'm not a lawyer but I don't think any government agent or police officer can enter your private home without a search warrant.
If you can wantonly invade any innocent person's house to search for fake Windows, then you can use the same argument to invade any innocent person's house to search for drugs or firearms. It's a violation of human rights, unless we are under martial law.
Before an NBI agent can obtain a search warrant, the NBI must prove to the judge that there is reasonable cause to believe that the house they are invading is a safehouse relevant to the commission of a crime. You cannot just ask a judge for a search warrant to invade any house you want without probable cause.
You don't even have to continue holding a conversation with a supposed to be NBI Agent asking you questions whether you have a computer or not. Just tell him: "if you have no search warrant then it's none of your business - end of conversation. Goodbye".
buti na lang may linspire/knoppix live cd ako puwede ko i boot from cd. hehehe!

My, my!, Microsoft has some really good lobbyists at the US gov't (which in turn threatens high piracy countries like the Philippines, China, etc with serious trade sanctions)!
These software firms like to "cook" a ridiculously high amount of taxes lost by the gov't to piracy. Obviously, the situation is usually blown out of proportions to put budget/financial deprived countries like the Philippines (obviously hungry for more tax to siphon and getting lots of flack from big brother, Uncle Sam) to allocate more and more of their strained NBI and PNP units to hunt piracy instead of combating more serious crimes or national issues such as the trade of prohibited substances (narcotics, drugs, etc), terrorism, kidnappings, frauds, youth deliquency, etc and the list goes on.
If Micosoft is so paranoid of piracy and why doesn't it just put some SERIOUS countermeasures into its software to prevent piracy? It has taken the step already with the retail version of Windows XP, which matches specific hardware components to a CD key.
