and other unlicensed softwares... FYI lang...

PNP, NBI joins anti-piracy campaign, warn of more raids
    By Erwin Lemuel Oliva
    INQ7.net

THE PHILIPPINE National Police (PNP) and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) agreed on Wednesday to help the Optical Media Board in its effort stamp out software piracy in the country.

The new anti-piracy campaign, dubbed Pilipinas Anti-Piracy Team, has set a 30-day deadline, starting August 16, for companies to stop using unlicensed software. PNP, NBI, and OMB officials said they were already eyeing several local companies but did not elaborate.

OMB Chairman Edu Manzano said that about 16 billion pesos in taxes are lost to piracy in the Philippines. This estimate covers the software and entertainment industry in the country.

Manzano disclosed that the OMB has closed down another major, illegal optical media replication facility in Balintawak last week, which has been operating for the past three years and producing 40,000 discs a day.
Meanwhile, Jeffrey Hardee, BSA vice president and regional director for Asia, stressed that software piracy is now more rampant online.

About 80 percent of IP violations happen through file-sharing networks, he added, noting that optical media piracy only accounts for a small portion of piracy problem worldwide.Hardee said that the industry organization is now quick to flag Internet service providers found hosting illegal software through file-sharing networks. There are now eight pending cases filed against local firms, according to Hardee.

BSA has been advertising a one-million-peso reward to anyone who can give on local companies violating the intellectual property rights of software firms. BSA has also given as much as 200,000 pesos to a tipster. "We've had several convictions already," Hardee added.

Companies have less than 30 days to stop using illegal software, he warned.
A 2004 study by the International Data Corp. for BSA put the software piracy rate in the Philippines at 71 percent, which amounts to 3.7 billion pesos lost to piracy.

there are ways na makakatipid for cafe owners, they can acquire the XP for multiple PCs, expensive but more value for money pag maraming units sa cafe. meron ata 5 licenses or 10 agad in 1 XP cd.

Anyway, I am all for supporting legitimate programmers and giving software companies just compensation for their products, but I also wish they'd take a realistic look at their product pricing vis-a-vis the operating expenses and buying power of typical Pinoy companies/home users.

Like yung MS Office 2003, nasa P13,000+ yung presyo nyan diba.

    Guys,

This campaign is for real, no more warning letters as in the past.
Let us know if you need help getting OEM copies for Windows XP and Office XP,
and network Windows 2003 advanced servers.
We are members of BSA too.

mahal ang license.. lalo na sa office.. once you hook your computer sa network.. aside from the license OS.. eh you need a Client Access License.. CAL.. kasi naka network..

it's better to be safe than sorry..

Actually, iba ang pricing for educational packaging, when I was in the US, the copies sold in the college store is around 20-30% cheaper than the retail version.

In addition, you have to consider how much it costs to pay programmers (and facilities) to release such a product.

Star Office will always be available hehe. Purchasing old Office 95/2000 na orig are considerably cheaper as well.

wait till you get the openoffice 2.0. the beta version that i'm using is now more reliable in converting complex doc, xls and ppt files.

regarding MS ata, it's entirely a different procedure. it's MS Seattle that initiates the raid. I know some businessmen friends who got warning letters directly from MS USA. they told me never to ignore it daw and dont even think na since MS US yun wala sila jurisdiction dito.

I think even M$ Phils are deliberately not informed, since marketing group lang naman nand2.
