well,
they have to justify their actions to someones, somehow.
first, they say the explosion that damaged their ship was not caused by enemy missile strike, but by so-called self-inflicted problem, even if un-intentional. eventually, the damaged ship sunk due to bad weather, or so they claim.
then they say no one was hurt, that the entire crew was somehow saved. later, they say the capitan died. (come on! a vessel explosion that large, and no one died?)
last, they beat their breasts, shouting for revenge against an entity that, by their own words, had no role in the loss of the ship and some of its crew.

in truth,
history has, time and again, been witness to the strong "justifying their actions".

in my opinion,
russia is counting on the premise that no one will risk using nukes in world war III.

nuclear weapons.
the great power equalizer.
where even small powers can wreak untellable damage to the strongest of powers.

someone (in tsikot and elsewhere) early already alleged to einstein, just how 'stupid' it was, to fight a war using nuclear weapons,
"... world war IV will be fought with sticks and stones... ",
or,
"no one wins in a nuclear war".
MAD. mutual assured destruction.
as far back as 1947, it was estimated that it needed only a hundred nuclear blasts, to destroy humanity as we know it. and that was using then-current technology. at present, there are thousands of nuclear warheads around the world, most of which, if not all, are many times more powerful than the hiroshima bomb.
