i really don't know how Locsin could really say that we should "stand on our own", knowing full well that we cannot, without gagging.

i wonder what his idea of "standing on our own" is. Most likely we will seek a VFA or similar agreement with another country other than the US. Not exactly "standing on our own" are we?

Whatever the outcome of this...whatever the number of soldiers who get killed because they did not have the intelligence that the US provided..whatever hundreds or thousands of innocents that die because terrorists managed to come in and train and plan attacks here with no harassment from us or the US...that's on their heads.

they had beaten the spaniards and were occupying intramuros.
but because news and instructions traveled very slowly, as europe was so far away, for spanish and british both,
after some time, the british just upped and left.

It's a good intention, but then reality hits when you realize:

- we don't have a mature defense industry and the technology to build our own warships and aircraft

- we relied on the US (exclusively) for advanced intelligence gathering (mainly making use of their reconnaissance aircraft and/or satellites) which are then forwarded to troops in the front line

- the threat of having your territorial waters taken from you is at your doorstep with a super power country masquerading as your friend

You can't do a Neville Chamberlain and wave a scrap of paper that says there will be peace because the person threatening war promised so.

the chinese can simply walk over, and we won't be able to do anything. there's over a billion of them...
and this is not just the phils. it is true for most smaller countries. only a small number of larger countries, can make the chinese think.
so how does a small country protect itself from such horrifying numbers?
