GMA's 2nd spine operation unsuccessful

MANILA, Philippines – (2nd UPDATE) Former First Gentleman Mike Arroyo revealed Wednesday that former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's second operation did not turn out well.
In an ambush interview, Mr. Arroyo said: "It was not successful. When they opened it, they saw there was an infection so she will rest for 3 weeks then they will operate on her again."
Arroyo underwent cervical spine surgery last July 29 wherein titanium implants and bone substitute were used to rebuild her spine.
She was scheduled to undergo revision surgery Wednesday morning after the implant placed in her spine was dislodged.
Arroyo’s attending physician Dr. Juliet Gopez-Cervantes said the former President was in extreme pain and was showing early signs of neurologic deficit or paralysis before the surgery.
Cervantes said the surgery, which lasted for 7 hours, was to remove the implant that was dislodged. However, it was held off due to the infection.
“She was operated on the same level and findings showed that there was some fluid in the area of the surgery. It was set for analysis and it showed that there is an infection. The reason for the dislodgement is the infection,” she said.
Cervantes explained that the surgery was unsuccessful because it failed to fix the dislodged implant in her spine.
“Unsuccessful probably because, as of now, we cannot place the implant yet. We still have to treat the infection first. The ultimate aim is to place internal support for her cervical bones, but that is not yet possible now,” said Cervantes.
She said Arroyo’s infection was unexpected.
“Infection in this kind of procedure, according to experts, has only a .54% chance. It was very rare but it is possible. She was placed in the Coronary Care Unit, we isolated from other patients, we limited the visitors. We did everything. It is unfortunate that this happened.” Cervantes said.
Cervantes added that Arroyo has been under antibiotics for a month.
Cervantes said Arroyo will be able to move but with difficulty. She will also be wearing an external support for her neck, since the internal implant was removed.
Arroyo’s vital signs are normal and she will be transferred to the Coronary Care Unit for continued monitoring.
Arroyo is scheduled for another surgery once the infection has been treated. -- Reports from Ron Gagalac and Niko Baua, ABS-CBN News
