MANILA, Philippines -- An “Honorable” Virgilio Garcillano in the House of Representatives will bring dishonor to the country, an opposition senatorial candidate said Thursday.
Reelectionist Sen. Panfilo Lacson, who is running in the Genuine Opposition slate, said he will campaign for GO bet Marilou Acosta of the Liberal Party for the congressional seat in the first district of Bukidnon against former Election Commissioner Virgilio Garcillano who was linked to alleged poll fraud in the 2004 presidential elections.
“Will it be a shame? Yes, I believe it will be a shame. The setting of Philippine politics is disgraceful enough and we don’t need another incident to make it more disgraceful,” Lacson said in a statement from Bukidnon province.
Lacson was with five fellow opposition candidates -- Senate President Manuel Villar, former senators Loren Legarda, John Osmeña and Nikki Coseteng, and lawyer Aquilino Pimentel III -- in a campaign rally in Cagayan de Oro City on Wednesday night.
The candidates motored through Bukidnon on Thursday.
“The ‘Hello Garci’ issue was never resolved. I don’t think history is done with Garcillano yet,” Lacson said of the former Commission on Elections official who was purportedly caught on tape discussing vote counts with someone who sounded like President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in 2004. Ms Arroyo later apologized for what she termed a “lapse in judgment.”
“If he gets elected, God forbid, I think we will have a Congress wrongly deserved because we should be making a strong statement against the assault on the integrity of the election,” Lacson said.
Garcillano faced a congressional inquiry in 2005 following months in hiding but nothing came of it.
