FROM 'HELLO GARCI' TO 'VOTE GARCI'?

Palace willing to support Garcillano in 2007 polls

FROM "Hello Garci" to "Vote for Garci"?
Malacañang appears willing to support former election commissioner Virgilio Garcillano should he run for congressman in Bukidnon in May 2007.
Garcillano is planning to run in the first district of Bukidnon, which is currently occupied by administration Rep. Nereus Acosta, who is on his third and last term.
Acosta's mother is reportedly seeking the same post.
"If he is not disqualified, why not?" replied Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita when asked if the administration party alliance would accept Garcillano as its candidate in the coming polls.
"I'm not sure if he is with Lakas or Kampi, both of which are in the alliance. But it's not difficult to know if you are Garcillano what party you will run under," Ermita said.
Garcillano is said to be the infamous male voice in the "Hello Garci" scandal that triggered President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's most serious political crisis a year and a half ago.
The woman's voice on the wiretapped telephone conversation with the election commissioner was said to be that of Arroyo. She herself had said sorry for a "lapse in judgment" in talking to a Comelec commissioner during the May 2004 election.
Opposition politicians claimed that the audio, which surfaced in June 2005, was evidence that Arroyo cheated in last year's presidential election.
The audio showed a woman who sounded like Ms Arroyo asking a man, said to be Garcillano, to rig the 2004 election by producing a one-million margin over her nearest rival, the late actor Fernando Poe Jr.
The "Hello Garci" tapes and questions about the legitimacy of Arroyo's presidency led to the resignation of a group of key Cabinet members, street protests and the filing of impeachment complaints against her.
Arroyo's allies in the House of Representatives thumbed down the impeachment complaints--in 2005 and again this year.
Opposition Sen. Panfilo Lacson said Malacañang could not afford to junk Garcillano.
"The truth is, they can ill afford to antagonize Garcillano lest he might tell the truth about the cheating in the May 2004 elections, which will inevitably implicate Arroyo and the others who participated in prostituting the May 2004 elections," Lacson said.
Ermita was noncommittal on what kind of support the administration was planning to extend to Garcillano.
"I cannot say with confidence what kind of support we will give. As long as he is with the alliance, we will back him up at the very least with moral support," Ermita said.
The executive secretary said he was not worried about the possibility of the opposition using Garcillano's candidacy to revive the "Hello Garci" scandal and make the President's legitimacy a key issue in the 2007 elections.
"The opposition had been harping at it for a long time. Just a few days ago, when the DOJ (Department of Justice) dismissed his (Garcillano) case, they were at it again. It is something that is of public knowledge that need not be kept hidden because it is being talked about publicly," said Ermita.
Even the prospect of infighting among party mates likely to be caused by Garcillano's candidacy did not faze the Palace.
"There are a lot of situations like that in the country because the majority party has many alliances. We will have to face these situations as they come. This is not the first time we are faced with the situation," said Ermita on the prospect of an Acosta-Garcillano standoff.

This could be a tactic (but will the Pinoys believe in them again...) They know that everytime the name Garci is mentioned, automatic recall yung Hello Garci. They will not let Garci win this time para ipangalandakan na how could he have secured GMA's win samantalang sya di nya nakayang ipanalo sarili nya...

    neknek nyo!!!

Sure win yan si Garci, tiyak kumita yan sa cover-up nya and with his COMELEC connection patok. It's the same formula that most of our politicians use to win elections. Same old, same old.
