The invitation of the PDEA chief for the VP to join their drug operations doesn't sit well with me.

Why would anybody invite the second highest official of the land to an operations knowing her safety might be compromise.

Gawin nila operations then maglagay sila ng live cam for the VP to watch in real time inside the war room.

Hence I do agree with his getting his own plane. Security aides need to be lucky always, assassins only have to be lucky once.

A SOBER ASSESSMENT OF WHAT’S NEXT FOR VP LENI

Most of us are still experiencing a residual high from VP Leni’s outfoxing of the “master tactician”/”genius” – as fanatic supporters fondly call Duts.

He offered her a post that only a fool would accept, or so they thought. It was a toothless position, bereft of any authority. It’s not even an agency. It’s merely a committee.

They were so sure she would reject the offer. Bato and Go were even taunting her to accept. They were ready to pounce on her once she rejects. #Purokalangdada was the planned hashtag, all set to roll out.

But then she accepted in such noble fashion that she elevated her stature to a true stateswoman, while making the “master tactician” look like a fool.

The gambit, designed to embarrass the Vice President, backfired. Now, the palace is in a quandary on how to backpedal out of this situation. The usual VP bashers are stunned. How will they continue bashing her without disparaging the war on drugs?

She immediately went to work, even without clear terms of reference for her new job. She convened the ICAD and made it clear to everyone that her priority is to stop the senseless killings related to the war on drugs. Those present gave her the due respect she deserves, at least for now.

Duterte allies and its trolls also immediately went to work. Bato and Go derisively advised her not to be soft on drug lords, and that she should be ready to kill or burn their houses. It’s really laughable considering they have not caught or killed a single big time drug lord in the more than 3 years they’ve been at it.

The day after she accepted the post, the Manila Times bannered a misleading headline, “VP Leni Skips Cabinet Meeting”. Soon after, a Memo from the President addressed to VP Leni warning her that absence in future Cabinet meetings will be dealt more severely - was being widely circulated by the usual Duts network.

Fake news, of course. The demolition job has begun. It will only get more vicious and cohesive as they get more organized.

Let’s not kid ourselves. This all happened, not because of an epiphany moment by Duts. It was more like a “pikon” moment, after VP Leni criticized his failed methods in the war on drugs.

When Duterte said, “I will give the Vice President my powers to enforce the law (in relation to drugs) for 6 months”, it was followed by “tingnan natin kung kayahin mo.” It was meant to mock her; it is not a recognition of her capacity to lead.

Sure, they might agree to her recommendation to equip policemen with body cams during drug-related operations. But I can’t imagine Duts agreeing to allow the UN and CHR to be involved, which is what VP Leni is publicly advocating.

Neither do I expect the PNP to turn over records of EJK incidents, when they continue to defy the Supreme Court order to make these documents public.

Sooner, rather than later, Duts will put a stop to this charade. All it will take is for one policeman to be hurt or killed for Duts to declare, with all the dramatics he can muster, “I will not allow MY policemen to be killed because of a faulty strategy by the Vice President. Enough is enough.”

Still, with the limited time VP Leni might have at the helm of this anti-drug body, she can make a difference. Every move she makes will be widely publicized. She can expose the fallaciousness of Duterte’s War on Drugs strategy. And she can show the world that a righteous and moral approach to the drug problem is a better alternative.

For us, supporters of VP Leni, we should be vigilant and defend her from the barrage of fake news that will soon flood social media. And we should call out comments from Go, Bato, Panelo and other Duts sycophants for what they are – STUPID.

Whatever happens next, one thing will be clearly established:

Our Vice President has GUTS… something terribly lacking with DUTS.
