Curious lang po. What would happen if 3 spark plugs lang ang nakalagay, can the engine still possibly run smoothly but with less power, or talagang magiging rough at irregular ang andar nya?

Tatakbo pa rin I think pero palyado. Sayang ang gas na mapupunta sa cylinder na wala o di gumaganang spark plug.

Ng nasa US ako, may nagamit akong rental na six cylinders. Pero may tipid mode siya na 3 cylinders lang ang gagamitin. Laking tipid sa gas.

well, the engine would run pero palyado. and I dont think its a very good idea to do it.

unburned gasoline will accumulate in the catalytic converter and muffler. in the muffler it will just cause a back fire, but in the cat it can cause a fire and even a big explosion. remember, a liter of gasoline has the same explosive power as 100 sticks of dynamite. would you want even 1 stick of dynamite explode under your car?

In a four cylinder engine, it would result in a rough running engine and would lead to bearing failure in the long run.

In other engine types like six cylinder engines, it is possible to shutdown three of the six cylinders. This means there is no spark nor fuel going to those cylinders. Also the valves are set to "open" during the compression phase of the cycle as to minimize parasitic loads. This will result in lower fuel consumption for larger engines when they are simply cruising at a constant speed or idling for a long time.

Actually the actual concept of shutting down one or more cylinders to save fuel isn't new, the problem is the resulting vibrations if the engine isn't balanced after the cylinder shutdown. Thats why this technique is more applicable to engines with 6 or more cylinders.

Sean, if you want to experiment. Remove the whole spark plug para walang compression resistance, the injector signal para walang fuel, the whole tension wire and tape the whole on the cap para walang arching.

If you want to go further shut the running mate piston and do the same as above. Do the sa pababang road para may momentum ka. Goodluck!

ang original na tanong ay "kung 3 sparkplugs lang ang nakalagay". I believe he is referring to a 4-cyl engine. So there is no sparkplug installed in one of the cylinder, and is left open. In this case there will be no considerable compression or vacuum being made in this particular cylinder. then the engine will still run, but with some noticeable vibration, and reduced power. If it is a carburator type, fuel air mixture of appreciable volume will not be sucked into the cylinder.
you will still be able to drive considerable distance in this mode.

if it's obd2 it will still flag a misfire on that cylinder...why misfire? because there will no crankshaft speed variation on the power stroke of that particular cylinder.

CMP is timed/meshed to CkP to be used to determine valve activity based on piston position and stroke. Without spark, fuel and compression How can there be missfire?

Experience ko ito sa 86 model lancer box type, habang tumatakbo biglang namatay ang makina, try ko start ok na ang then pagaandar na namamatay uli ang makina, nag mag check sa makina found out maluwag yung israng high tension wire ng spark plug after reconnecting ito ok na uli ang takbo.
