The 97 Sentra ST is using a GA16DNE engine. It is an EFi engine. It is similar to the GA16DE engine found in the B13 Sentra and Sentra Exalta but it has a downdraft style intake manifold. The GA16DE has a sidedraft style intake manifold.
Performance difference is minimal.
GA16DE = 110 hp
GA16DNE = 105 hp
If you still want to upgrade your engine, your options would be going for the SR series engines. Most common is the SR20DE which is rated at 140 to 145 HP stock. You can tune this engine to produce 180hp N/A.
Other alternatives are SR20DET or the rare SR20VE, both producing over 200hp. There are also other types like the SR16VE and some SR18 series.
If you plan to upgrade the engine, be prepared to upgrade other areas of your car as well. These would include the brakes and suspension. The suspension would need more attention because the SR20 engine is heavier so you will need to have stiffer springs just not to bottom out the front end whenever you hit a bump on the road.
