My own assumptions lang which has no confirmed facts... The steering wheel control, if the wired types, most probably came from winterpine or its mother company wintersnow(?). I know that wintersnow distributed our JVC headunits, so if my guess is correct, their paired it with the avt steering remote module. And they were able to find the correct code for it to work, but my concern is, what did they do to the HUs?
For some reason, the HUs we get here in the Phils, well at least the JVC HUs we get here, do not have an control out, so no where to plug the module. I know this because of course our stock HUs we can see for ourselves, and then my DVD HU doesn't have it also, but if you buy it in the states, it does have it.. weird right?
Anyways, i know this because, like a lot of you know, i took out the stock HU and placed a DVD HU instead. Then, i bought wifey a new car, a rav4 to be exact, and she wanted sounds, or at least a unit that can play her ipod or USB flash. So instead of spending for a new HU, i put in the JVC HU from the MS. Its pretty good anyways.. but the steering wheel had a remote, so here comes the problem. How do you get it to work with the new HU? There are a few ways, but i insisted on wired connections because i would hate the lag on the IR types. So off i did the research, wintersnow had to take my HU for servicing, and add the proper adaptors to plug in the remote module. So they explained to me that they had to somehow tweak the IR slot in the back and convert it into a remote out port. Which they did and now its connected to the steering wheel... Great right? Wrong, then we find out the module had to be set to car's specific code, and all we had is the code of the older rav4. And now, i'm waiting for them to figure it out, while the module is already installed and paid for not knowing if it will ever work.
Anyways, the point is, if this is the way they did the new MS, then the warranty of the HU will only be thru them and not JVC... I am happy that they added the steering wheel remote though, but for those like me or are planning to get a new HU.. The steering wheel remote might be useless to you. Or make sure and ask what HUs are compatible with whatever module they installed so the remote will work.
I will not believe that the MS steering wheel remote are like other cars that have them because our HUs are installed by a 3rd party. Unlike other cars, the remote and the HU is from the car manufacturer, such as the honda accord or the new volvos, the HU is not installed by a 3rd party, it really carries the brand of the car manufacturer, so it came out the assembly line already installed.
But like i said, these are all assumptions and nothing confirmed. Educated guesses if you will. But then again, if its true, it might help someone decide to buy a new HU or not.
