Presence of mind should be the key in such situation, either quickly step on the brake or put the gear to neutral. Happened to me once before as I accidentally step on the gas pedal.

Everyone have had their lapses one way or another. Sadly, this is one lapse that claimed lives.

As much as I would like to empathize with the driver when others vilify him, everyone should remember that when you're in control of a vehicle/deadly weapon, you need to be at the top of your game. I know this is easier said after the fact, but that's the responsibility we all took when we got our DLs. We can only learn from these sad events and do our best (and pray) it doesn't happen to us.

Another Tatak Duterte project tainted with corruption...

Also letting the vehicles point towards the entrance is another contributing factor.

    ^ Beat me to it.

This "hole" in the Swiss cheese model would've been the last line of defense... if only it worked. From the looks of it, they're not anchored/embedded deep enough to serve its function as a protective bollard against vehicle penetration. There's a whole slew of ASTM standards for protective bollards that covers what kind of vehicles (and its weight) can it withstand, the max speed it is going, and how much penetration is allowable. It would be curious to know if the ones in NAIA adhered to any standard, if at all.

Yes, looks like shallow mount bollards.

Safety bollards are supposed to be embedded to the ground... As the NAIA bollards were merely screwed to the surface.

Yeah, those will probably stop pushcarts and e-bikes... maybe

They really need serious protective bollards, especially since the area has large volumes of vehicles immediately next to large volumes of pedestrians.

can't transition the world to left foot braking, that'd create more accidents and we couldn't have done it from the very beginning coz of m/t maybe in the future when all cars are EV

A young child and a 29 year old shouldn't have lost their lives if only the driver was more careful

They need to use the same bollards used in the US embassy.
Those can supposedly stop a truck laden with explosives from ramming the gate or wall of the embassy.
