Shotgun is one of the most versatile long firearm I want to have in a shft situation. A trained operator will not have a problem loading ammo that is why in tactical trainings, shotgun and a reliable sidearm go hand in hand (watch Magpul The Art of Dynamic Shotgun).

A modern quality shotgun is also like any modern rifle. Recoil is suppressed by upgrading dampening furniture (to make it also look tacticool ) and/or using reduced recoil loads. If 12 gauge is too strong to handle, then use 20 gauge.

Why I want a shotgun? Ammunition and parts is cheap, versatile and readily available anywhere. Stopping power is awesome. It is a highly effective in CQB and if need be, for long range duty (watch hickok45). Shotgun is good at hitting a moving target at 20 to 50 meters and highly destructive at a closer distance. If you want to hit targets 50 meters and beyond, just switch to slug shotshells. It can also be used for hunting small wild game animals for food (using birdshot load) which if you use say a M16 or AK, will completely obliterate your duck meal. You also eliminate the need to carry magazines (unless the shotgun is magazine fed type). It is highly effective at breaching doors and destroying locks. For crowd control, you can use non-lethal loads. Shotguns are easy to field strip and clean on the fly. No other long firearm, can do all of these.

SWAT and special forces always have one in most of their operations (pump or semi-auto). If these guys depend on this all around weapon, I want one for myself as well, for all around use.

The cocking sound of pump shotgun alone creates fear to those at the other end of its barrel.
