Depends, most vintage watches will be worth less than modern counterparts unless it is a limited edition or a popular model that has few surviving examples. Condition will also play a big part in valuation. The better the condition the higher the value. Pateks and Rolexes are the ones that tend to hold their value or even appreciate in value over time.
This red Submariner from 1972 for example is valued at $15,000+ today, and had a retail price of around $380 when it came out in 1972.

Compared to a modern example today which retails for around $8,000+. What's so special about it? That red "submariner". That's how silly it is. But a lot of people buy into that, and they pay willingly and generously with their wallets.
