MANILA, Philippines – The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS George Washington and its escort warships are scheduled to arrive Saturday morning in Manila for a four-day goodwill visit.

The American carrier group's port call aims to "further enhance the strong historic ties between the US and the Philippines," according to the US Embassy in Manila.

The 100,000-ton "supercarrier" will be "anchored out in Manila Bay and the only way to gain access to it is through a ferry service," said an embassy media advisory.

During their visit, some of the George Washington's 5,500-plus crew and air wing members will take part in "community relations projects and professional exchanges between the US and Philippine navies."

On August 11 to 15, 2009, the George Washington carrier group made its first goodwill visit to the country.

This carrier group is the only one based outside the continental US. It is based at Yokosuka, Japan, replacing the now decommissioned USS Kitty Hawk.

The carrier was transiting off the coast of Southern California working on its combat operations efficiency evaluation with Carrier Air Wing Five (CVW-5). George Washington was en route to Yokosuka, Japan, where the ship replaced the USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63).

I got to see the USS George Washington (CVN73) when it passed by our power station last year. It was huge, dwarfed the other ships passing the Verde Island straight.

I had a chance to go this morning, and almost missed the ferry. Thanks to Ale Cruz, The Glenn Marine Group and Paolo Paradero for the invite.

We Rode the ferry for around 40 minutes from MOA at 9am. They have their temporary dock at MOA right smack in the middle. You get around 90 to 120 mins of tour inside. It was just amazing and I was like at panic mode what to shoot .... hehe.

Gloomy day, good thing it rained after our tour. Here are some photos for now.
