December 19th, 2015 01:02 PM #5458Nona death toll rises to 34
Saturday, December 19, 2015 11:32AM
Thirty-four people have been confirmed killed as of Saturday morning due to the onslaught of Typhoon Nona in Luzon and Visayas regions.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) announced in a live briefing that 13 of the deaths were reported in Mimaropa, five in Cagayan Valley, three in Calabarzon, four in Bicol, eight in Eastern Visayas and one in Metro Manila.
NDRRMC chief Alexander Pama also reported that five more people have been reported missing and 24 others were injured due to Nona.
Pama also reported that 42 roads and 21 bridges in Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol, Eastern Visayas and CAR were still impassable.
He also said that eight cities and 45 municipalities are still experiencing power interruptions due to damaged power lines caused by Nona's strong winds.
In an earlier report, the agency said a total of 165,554 families or more than 740,000 people were preemptively evacuated in Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol and Central and Easetern Visayas in preparation for the onslaught of the typhoon.
Meanwhile, Pama said that 2, 076 families or 9,984 people were preemptively evacuated in Surigao del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Agusan del Norte, Dinagat Island, Misamis Occidental, Misamis Oriental, Bukidnon, Lanao del Norte and Davao Oriental in preparation for Tropical Depression Onyok.
Onyok weakened into a low pressure area (LPA) after making landfall over Manay, Davao Oriental on Friday night.
In its 11 a.m. advisory, weather bureau PAGASA said that the LPA that was formerly Onyok was estimated in the vicinity of Ampatuan, Maguindanao.
It said that the LPA and the tail-end of a cold front will bring moderate to heavy rains and thunderstorms over Caraga region, Central and Eastern Visayas and the provinces of Misamis Oriental, Misamis Occidental, Davao Oriental, Aurora and Quezon.
PAGASA said that heavy rains in these areas may cause flashfloods and landslides.
It advised fishermen not to venture out into the northern, eastern and western seaboards of Luzon and the eastern seaboards of Visayas and Mindanao. —ALG, GMA News
