somehow I agree with you. let's take for example, the movies: Mad Max and the Postman. The people depicted there are survivors of a nuclear war that they never knew nor even witnessed. some of their elders could have first hand experience of the war that took place but like the rest of the other younger survivors, their guess is as good as the lot. probably because, they were also very young (age of 1-8) when the war took place. they have no idea of their former world: the arts and sciences, the organizational structure & society, the culture and even the former religion, beliefs and aspirations.
kumbaga, para na din sila tinapon sa isang planeta na wala ka-id-idea sa mundong ginagalawan nila. all they have are ruined artifacts and remains of a former world. and like the modern humans that their ancestors were, the natural tendency was to continue to survive. and so they form groups, unite and build makeshift communities. at first, they share willingly the natural resources that the new world has to offer. and then their numbers multiply exponentially. Then the competition starts bec. a group of survivors will clash with another group and so on so forth.
along the way, when competition becomes very stiff, some survivors will become creative and will put meanings on some existing ancient ruins to gain advantage. advantages such as the ability to persuade other survivors to rally with their cause bec. they are somehow protected by a supernatural entity of some sort. The rival group also sees through with this strategy and applies the same.
and so religions evolve to what we have now. the best thing about religion: it's timeless. it can stand time and the message lives on from generation to generation. Unlike in military and political organizations, generals/leaders live and die, aspirations come and fade.
yun mga nangyayari ngaun sa 'tin, yan na yun. people enforcing their beliefs and ideals to the extreme. hindi lang naman mga Muslims ang guilty dito, even the Christians/Jews alike. Yes, we were thought since childhood that being idealistic is the right thing to do. pero mayroon din kasabihan, anything in excess is bad also. kumbaga pag sobrang right ka nahehehe o sobrang tama ka, mali ka na nun!
