IMHO, its them government officials who call the OFW 'bagong bayani'.
whoever started this "bagong bayani " tag..lets face it...iyan remittances ng mga pinoy ay meron or kung hindi man ...malaki naitutulong sa gobyerno...kaya hindi issue kung sino ang nag bansag ng tawag na iyan

If you ask me, I'd rather have our professionals work locally and help the country grow. As woulfe27 said (and I agree), magagaling talaga ang mga pinoy, but the reality is, nasasayang ang skills nila dito because of corrupt government officials.

Everyone has his / her own opinion diba? Let's not resort to this okay?
just like what you've said ...im entitle on my own opinion

But what would you rather have? Remittances that help the country? Or professionals / OFWs using their superior skills and working locally to help the country? I'd rather have tha latter, because though remittances help the country, its only short-term. People working here are for the long term naman.

Consider this: A pinoy was able to invent a new miracle drug. If he patented it here, and the government helps him by giving him subsidies / investments, then the Philippines would be the manufacturing core of this new drug. Imagine how much dollars will we all reap. Now the so-called first world countries would be buying from us.

In another scenario, the pinoy was able to invent this miracle drug. But then, he is working for a US Pharmaceutical Company. His invention would be taken by the company and patented as its own. Then they'll be earning billions from it. And when we need to buy the drug locally, they will sell it at an astronomical price. As for the pinoy, he is diligently sending his remittance back home.

Sending remittances may look like helping the country, but it is not. The primary purpose of sending one's hard-earned money back home is to feed his / her family. If one is to do something else more patriotic, then one would send half of his earnings to the Philippine government.

As for coming back home, yes I agree there is no place like home. But I've noticed that a lot of those who go abroad would rather stay there. And if they could bring their families to emigrate, they will. Yes, not everyone wants to stay abroad. But a lot do.

As long as the country does not change, good quality people would rather leave and find a better place to live.

    ***

IMHO, if one is to be a proud pinoy, he / she should do something for the betterment of all pinoys, instead of just talking about it and sticking flags.

If one is to do something else more patriotic, then one would send half of his earnings to the Philippine government.
ano ito ...another hypothetical na naman

People working here are for the long term naman

Yes, not everyone wants to stay abroad. But a lot do.

.. hehe .. superman mentality naman yung do something for the betterment of all pinoys .. ok na sa akin yung batman mentality ... it's ok to work in your sphere of influence .. parang dito sa tsikot .. wala naman ako maitutulong sa pilipinas in general except to talk in this forum and make people aware that there is at least 1 person who still believes in the philippines .. hindi naman ito makakadagdag sa kaban ng bansa .. hindi naman ito mababasa ng mga politiko na namumuno .. hindi naman ito makakain ng pamilya ko ... but it just might make another tsikoteer a believer as well ... or another tsikoteer to know that he is not alone in believing .. and perhaps this will ripple into other tsikoteers or to other people in their own spheres of influence to work harder, pay correct taxes, drive safely, vote wisely, and perhaps one day .. makita natin na umunlad yung bansa natin .. and even if that day never comes ... at least we were part of nation building .. rather than trying to bring it down .. and that's something we can be proud of ..

Yes, but what is the primary purpose? To be a patriot, or to send money to feed one's family?

So you are working abroad pala? Or you have plans to go abroad?

I think I should reprhase what I said... tama ka, it does appear to be sort of like a 'superman mentality'.

What I meant was, even the little things you do to try to improve the lives of everyone, can go a long way in helping the country.

For example, in my case, I try to use biodiesel as much as possible. Though it 's an additional cost on my part (its not a requirement to use it anyway), I just want to lessen the pollution my ride generates. Less pollution = better air quality = healthier people and surroundings.

Another example would also be following traffic rules. If one person would just follow the rules, then at least that is one less person that adds to the chaos.

These things may be trivial, but if a lot of people start doing it, then don't you think the country would be a better place to live in? Tama ka diyan sa ripple effect.

    guys guys...

    peace brothas!

Why do you keep on repeating about 'respecting other people's opinion'? Yes, I have my own opinion and I do respect other's opinion too. I don't go as far as calling other people's opinion as 'stupid' or 'pamimilosopo'.

I am just opening a topic for healthy conversation, that we can debate and talk about. I am not forcing my thoughts on anyone. If you're idea of 'respecting other's opinion' is not to comment on yours, then so be it.

    Peace to all!
i just want to make something clear. If you will review my first post on this thread, I just answered the question on whether or not "anyone is proud to fly the Philippine flag," during the independence day. I didnt even explicitly say that im not proud to be pinoy, much less "tatalikuran ang pagkapinoy ko."

well, i wasn't really expecting much from you. based on your poor grammar, i knew what kind of answers to expect from you. but you're showing some signs of improvement, so keep it up. who knows, you might just pull it off.
