Taiwan’s call for a joint inquiry was endorsed Saturday by the left-leaning fisherfolk alliance Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas (Pamalakaya).
In a press statement, Pamalakaya vice chair Salvador France said leaders of Manila and Taiwan should jointly agree to investigate the incident that would lead to the establishment of truth, delivery of justice and promotion of foreign relations based on the collective interest of the Taiwanese and Filipino people.
"President Benigno Simeon Aquino III and his extraordinary war freaks in Malacanang should know that foreign diplomacy is not all about arrogance and sheer puppetry to US. It is all about mutual respect, political humility and strong sense of patriotism and independence which are gravely lacking from the current leadership in Malacanang," France said.
He described Taipei’s proposal as "politically sound and morally correct.” Another option is for both sides to agree to “an independent probe to be sanctioned by the United Nations or by the governments themselves," the Pamalakaya official said.
But Pamalakaya appealed to the Taiwanese government to spare Filipinos in Taiwan. "You can drag Philippine President Benigno Simeon Aquino III and the members of the trigger happy Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) to hell, but please spare the Filipino people, including the 42,000 migrant workers working in Taiwan. We too are victims of this puppet state of Washington in Manila."
Malacanang officials strongly protested the use of the term “murder” on Saturday in the report released to media by a panel deployed to Manila by Taipei to investigate the circumstances of the incident on Balintang Channel in northern Philippines.
On the Taiwanese government report issued Saturday about the incident at sea, Perez lamented, “the Taiwanese investigators’ action was premature . . . .We were trying to arrange a meeting between them and Department of Justice. We had to do it through channels, through the office of [Justice] Secretary [Leila] de Lima.”
He said they had wanted the Taiwanese probers to meet with their counterparts in NBI, and admitted they were stunned by the sudden moves of the Taiwanese. “They could not wait, and then they came out with press statement on Saturday.”
Regarding the three demands of the Taiwanese—formal apology, compensation to the victim’s family and justice for the perpetrators---Perez explained the peculiar context of the demand for an official apology.
“President Aquino authorized me to apologize to the family, and the Taiwanese people. But they want a written apology from the President.” However, he said, “our law here prohibits” direct dealings with Taiwan of the Philippine President, Vice President, Senate President, Secretary of Foreign Affairs and Secretary of National Defense.
On the compensation for the fisherman’s family, Perez said that on Wednesday afternoon, “I told their Ministry of Foreign Affairs to please arrange a Thursday meeting with the family. But we were told the family doesn’t want to meet anybody. The following day, we were asked if we wanted to go. So we said yes. Then the officials said, we will give you the address, but we can’t give you security. You go at your own risk.”
He noted, “the problem is, President Ma is pushed to the wall, he has to show he’s tough on us. . . . Emotions are really running very high. Galit sa gobyerno nila; at may pahiwatig na galit sa Pilipino.”
He said the crisis, however, has not yet reached a point requiring repatriation of OFWs. If that happens, he is confident Philippine authorities will be ready.

Funny though, PHL and Taiwan are both US allies, yet hirit sila ng US puppetry and all. Kind of sounds out of place.
The rest of their arguments are ridiculously pathetic as well.
Reporters should really stop paying attention to these dumbF's.

On another note, during usap-usapang over lunch, there were some tidbits that the Taiwanese regularly go fishing in our waters. The only difference in this incident was that the guy (who got shot) did not pay so they tried to chase him away. Chismis lang but knowing how things are here, it is possible.
i read that the reason behind the taiwanese president's explosive politicizing rhetorics is that he is using this relatively "easy-to-solve-diplomatic" issue against the philippines as a propaganda tool in an attempt to raise his abysmal 14% approval rating in taiwan.
it just goes to show that politicians everywhere will use underhanded tactics to ensure staying in power
Hhhhmmmm... Our engineers love (pa naman) the Taiwanese in Kaohsiung, Hsinchu and Taipei.....

OFW injured in Taiwan attack gets apology from attackers
May 20, 2013 8:06pm
An overseas Filipino worker in Taiwan who was attacked by a group of Taiwanese last Saturday has recovered from his injuries, and has gotten an apology from his attackers.
OFW Joey de Leon said in a radio interview Monday his foot injury has healed and he can now go back to work.
"Ngayon naka-recover ako... Nakakapagtrabaho kami nang normal," he said in an interview on dzBB radio.
De Leon said he was attacked by three Taiwanese near his dormitory Saturday. He suffered an injury to the foot as a result.
However, he said the suspects had been taken into custody and authorities arranged for them to meet. He did not name the suspects.
"Inaayos namin ang lahat na problema, naghingi sila ng sorry sa akin," he said.
But he said the suspects insisted the attack was due to their drunken state and not because they were picking on a Filipino.
"Humingi ng sorry dahil dala ng inom, nakainom sila, hindi nila expect mga Pilipino nakatira rito," he said.
When asked if he and his attackers are now friends, he said, "Opo."
Taiwan had frozen the hiring of Filipino workers and discouraged its residents from traveling to the Philippines following the fatal shooting of a Taiwanese fisherman off disputed waters last May 9.
While many Filipinos in Taiwan have reported being harassed, Manila Economic and Cultural Office head Amadeo Perez Jr. said the incidents appeared to decline starting Sunday. — BM/HS, GMA News
