That is because they also produce 25% of the world's total goods and service. They are also the top exporting country in the world. So consuming 25% of the world's oil output is not surprising for a highly developed and financially capable country like theirs.

Worst polluter? If you are only taking into account greenhouse gases in which its effects is highly debatable. You may mutter global warming but then again the earth undergoes a natural global warming & cooling phase every 10,000 years or so. In all other aspects, their environmental record is already good as compared to other highly polluted developing countries.
