Just a thought, why not declare that owning such vehicles as illegal? Or, if LTO has the balls, decline registration of vehicles with questionable origins? I think everyone knows the difference between a local/legal and the smuggled cars.
    Easier said than done.

The main reason why smuggling goes on unabated because of this administration's lack of political will.

I beleive this is just a tip of the iceberg. There are lots of unscrupulous deals and transactions being allowed by certain individuals in the government.

Halimbawa, Mazda at Nissan.

Kahit asar ako sa CAMPI I will join them in their call of giving them protection by the government.(of course yung nag-aasemble lang locally tulad ng Toyota, UMC, Honda at Isuzu. The rest, bahala kayo!)

DAPAT HINDI I-RATIPIKA ANG JPEPA!DAPAT SUGPUIN ANG SMUGGLING SA MGA FREEPORTS!

Correct ka dyan. This is not a problem of car smuggling, but smuggling per se. There is big big business in smuggling. The under the table is on the container load. If the item being smuggled has more chargeable taxes, then the under the table per container goes higher. Smuggling is an industry in itself already.

When you say "brand new L200," do you mean the new Strada (yung mukhang Dakar racer)? Diba made in Thailand yun?

Problem is smuggled cars also have an OR and CR. And the LTO has no way of knowing if it is smuggled kasi may OR/CR siya. They can't even check if the OR/CR is legit or smuggled yung car.

--If an agency of our government who supposedly has the expertise on detecting whats a legit or illegal or/cr --cannot perform its duty--dapat dyan i-abolish na lang yan.

Ang kaso nila Technical smuggling, misdeclaration of goods.

Grabe winasak na yung mga kotse just a few months ago, di pa rin nadala, may napuslit na naman grabe talaga katakawan ng mga tao sa Subic customs!!!

Palace group-Customs row on smuggled cars worsens By Joyce Pangco Paņares
    Manila Standard Jan 14, 2008

THE quarrel between Malacaņang and Customs worsened yesterday after the Palace blamed a Customs official for the continuing smuggling at the agency. The Presidential Anti-Smuggling Group called a ranking Customs official the “godfather of smuggling” in the country, blaming him for the continuing operation of 37 people who allegedly smuggle luxury cars from Metro Manila and Cebu alone.

He named a Romy Ronquillo in particular, who is accused of operating car centers in Xavierville, Quezon City, and in Ortigas, Pasig City, that allegedly offer smuggled luxury vehicles.

Villar said Ronquillo had even dropped the name of presidential son and Pampanga Rep. Juan Miguel Arroyo, Villar’s godson, to warn his group to leave him alone.

Last month, Villar’s group seized 81 luxury cars from an automobile firm in Makati City, of which three reportedly were owned by San Juan Mayor Jose Victor Ejercito.
Albay Rep. Al Francis Bichara reportedly owned four of the smuggled vehicles, while comedian Willie Revillame admitted owning a 2006 Ferrari, which was declared as being worth only P1 million. With Joel E. Zurbano

Arroyo....
