i've been searching for 2nd cars the past 2 weeks. my budget is also around (250-350) for a 1999 model up A/T car.
my impression after many many test drives
1) 2000-2001 exalta - (priced between 340 - 370k) this is originally my first choice, and have tested several in the market. i got disappointed though with the condition of the cars. most had some rattles in the interior. the leather seats were worn, one had cracked plastic seat bottoms, one had torn leather due to normal usage. the aircon switches and radio buttons also fade. some electronic devices already stopped working (e.g., sunroof switch). i eventually crossed this out of my list because the quality of the interior was way below my expectations. although, you can't get a more feature packed interior than this car, well maybe except a newer model lynx.
2) corolla - couldn't get hold of an available 2000-2001. even though they resell at 390k above (less features but more expensive than an exalta), it's always immediately sold. i learned that the toyota has very good reputation for reliability and the maintenance cost is cheapest compared to all other japanese brands (or so they say), that's why it's a bit hard to find this one. i didn't pursue this one because i don't like the exterior look of the 2000 model anyway...
3) lynx - prices vary wildly. for 2000-2001 Ghia model, prices can go from 320k to 400k. depending on the condition i guess. another considerable model is the GSi (less than 350k). I'll most probably get this one because i got a good deal on a 2001 model. the interior is almost as impressive as the exalta (minus sunroof). and i like the drive, feels more sporty than the exalta (the exalta feels heavy, like driving a bigger car, and seems slower, but that's only based on impression).
4) astra - almost closed a deal on one (for 335k, 2000 model). absolutely great drive! feels solid like my lola's 80's mercedes. although it lacks the leather and gadgets of the exalta and lynx, the interior feels just as luxurious. BUT after reading the horror stories of opel owners in the forums here, plus the potential expense if ever something major fails, i decided not to get this one. sayang. of all the cars i tested, ito sana ang pinaka masarap ang 'feel'.
5) lancer - usually sells cheaper than the others. some MX models are as feature packed. but since i already drive a '95 lancer, and underneath the 2000 model is essentially the same car, i decided i want to change brand. but for a fact i know that it's not expensive to maintain a lancer. replacement parts abound everywhere (like a toyota). so this could be a good choice for you.
Few things I realized while searching for a 2nd hand car: dealers of 2nd hand cars seem to add 50k premium, the usually reduce prices by only 5-10k. and though the cars in their showrooms always look nicer, i get very suspicious with their very low mileage (4 yr old car usually at 30k- km only?!). i always find going to direct sellers more convincing (usual mileage is at 50-60k km for a 2000 model). it just take a lot lot lot more time and energy. but it's fun anyway.
good luck!
also worth considering are the mid size cars (accord, gallant, etc). for your budget, the usual model would be 1997-1998. but they'll be a bit more expensive to maintain, and eat up more gas.
of course take into consideration the use of the car. if it will be just for city drving, subcompact cars are at the top. for faster travelling speed in the cities and a bit on travelling, go for the 1.6L. get the 1.8L above if you really want power and your more of the out of town person. These reminders will actually size down your choices. for luxury, exalta is the bang for the buck. for easier maintenance, lancer and corollas. i personally like the 323's and lancer's.![]()
kramos, it's not your imagination... the exalta is pretty sluggish. Yan mga problem sa interior and electricals all depend on how well the previous owner took care of the car... but some of Nissan's niggles are purely their own, and not attributable to normal wear and tear... it's potluck whether you get a good one or not.
My cousin has a 98-99 Corolla, and it does have less problems than some other secondhands, but it is not perfect either.... no secondhand is!
as for the midsized cars... forget it!!! Galant parts are hella expensive, and I have a lot of horror stories to tell about those beautiful front ball-joints (I've seen a LOT of ball-joint failures in Galants)... Accords may be more sturdy than Galants, but parts are even dearer... better to get compacts!
Ang pagbalik ng comeback...
thanks guys for all of your inputs! So far i've really gained a lot of insights...
well, from what i've read so far, the corolla seems to be the practical buy...i think its more important to consider the performance, the maintenance costs, and of course the sturdiness (tibay) of a car...also from my opinion, since some of the guys here said that corolla lacks some things accessory wise, i guess i could set aside some budet for this. Maybe i could purchase a new sound system for the car..something like that..correct me if im wrong..
guys i'd like to ask, how much would a 98 up corolla cost? kahit stock lng and hindi yng pinormahan...basta still in a good condition..

ah ganun ba? e d probably range nlng cgro..para at least may idea ako ng prices nya if i buy..
chka ano yng mga latest na models ng cars na pwde ko i-consider given my budget na 350K max na tlga.
tnx!
ito ho sakin idea..
1) used cars
pros - lesser cash exposure
range of brand choices
range of year models (toyota/honda up to 98 models for your P350k budget; ford/koreans up to 2001 models
low insurance premium w/ high risk factors like total wreck or carnap non coverage
cons - highly suspect type of car usage
warranty voids
high maintenance
insurance limitations
high maintenance
2) new cars
pros - swak na swak ang kia picanto sa budget mo kasama na insurance + 3 years warranty
cons - not your type of car due to smaller engine (1.1l) and brand (korean)
convince your dad the practicality of subcompact cars given the toughness of car ownership these current times..
'yan lang ho talaga mashare ko..
1999-2000 sentra FE. 1.3L engine, power steering only (nothing else) 200k - 250k. mura sa gas!!
for 300k - 350k you can get a shark galant or a cefiro. :D and then the gas consumption cost will eat you alive. i've calculated that my 2.0L car costs me about 4,000 A MONTH on gasoline. or almost 50,000 a year. Scary, huh? and i don't even use it everyday.![]()
OT: normal lang pala ang 7km/L for a 1.6 car? malos maiyak ako sa 6-7km/L on my engine eh. ok na pala yun? i thought i just badly need a tuneup! :D
have to understand na ang consumo ng oto natin patay sa traffic, expect to lose up to 2-3 km/li dahil sa stop and go.

for 350k, you can get lucky on some 2001 models, if you find a willing seller. obviously, direct seller lang makakabigay ng ganitong presyo. i just closed a deal on a 2001 car for 360k. i had it checked with someone who knows "technical" stuff (engine, suspension, etc) and he was impressed with the car. parang bago pa raw, 25k km pa lang kasi ang takbo (car was bought late september 2001, so halos 2002 na rin). so i consider myself lucky. i really think you get other great deals like this if you're relentless with your search (i searched all available classifieds everyday for 2 weeks!).
expect though to find 2000 models to be more commonly within your price range. if you go to second hand car lots, expect prices to be in the 400k+ range for a 2000 above model.
for a 1998 model, 350k is more than enough.
good luck!
Guy's need you help to decide, if have 300thou budget and someone offer lynx ghia 99 model worth 320K. which is better, buy a bnew; like vios or any sedan type or take the opportunity to get the lynx.
more power for all tsikot member's................
the first gen lynx is a good buy. I still haven't heard of a major problem from the lynx members of protegetech (cept for the one who fouled up his timing when he installed a KSTC). if you are on a budget - this is the best bang for the buck. though you can still haggle the price IMO.
though comparing it to a new car (like the vios) is really hard to gauge since the price difference is just way too big (they start at around 500K). if you have the money then go for it.
Maraming 98-99 na Toyota Corolla GLi (syempre Toyota...) sa 300-350K range.
Based on www.buyandsellph.com, may year 2000 pa na GSI sa 300-320K.
Maybe there should be a sticky thread on why you should buy a second hand or why should you by a brand new car... Or search the web na lang.
BNEW - less (to absolutely 0) sakit ng ulo sa repairs
Pre-Owned - possible sakit ng ulo sa repair, esp. if car's history is unknown/questionable
BNEW - mas mahal, isipin mo pa pang-hulog mo sa financing kung nag-down ka lang.
Pre-Owned - fully paid na (unless pina-finance mo rin, in which case mas mataas pa interest rate kesa bnew)
BNEW - warranty
Pre-Owned - bahala ka sa buhay mo (unless the dealer gives you 30 days or so)
BNEW - some modifications will void the warranty
Pre-Owned - mod all you want kung after the warranty period.
etc... wala na ako maisip...
for fuel efficiency.. go for 1.6 mitsu lancer...
my mitsu lancer itlog glxi can go 10-11 km/liter city driving....
ewan ko lang yung mga newer pizzas....
